Alhambra radio reception

Hello,

I've got a 2001 alhambra with the radio antenna built into the rear offside window. AM reception with the standard radio wasn't very good but since replacing it with a Kenwood unit, its non-existant! Is this common and if so, is there anyway of improving it? FM reception is fine, by the way.

I have just replaced my standard passat radio with a Kenwood unit and had exactly the same problem, I got a booster ariel unit from Halfords for £13.99 and now the reception is great on am, fm and lw.
