VW do a single DIN trim plate and cubby hole to fit in the place of the original radio, which is actually bigger than double DIN. It costs about £20-30 quid iirc. A single DIN radio just slides into this.
It isn't a staight swap of radios, VW connectors are quadlock for the radio and Fakra for the aerial, instead of ISO connectors on most aftermaket radios.
Autoleads do a range of converter cables that you can sort things out with. Most important of all is to use a 12V powered converter for the radio, otherwise reception will be dire. Be careful where you buy from, prices vary wildly. Halfords tend to be a the expensive end of life.
You will also need a switched live supply for the radio, because the standard job is permanently powered and switches on and off with the ignition using CANbus. You can pick up a supply either from the fusebox behind the driver's door or from the 12V socket inthe ashtray.
