View Full Version : Audi trying to rip me off!!!

I ordered the new A4 in November of last year. Just prior to ordering the car the dealer at Audi gave me an indication on Two cars I currently own as potential trade in cars. Anyway 8 months down the line my new A4 is almost due for delivery so I took my trade in cars back to Audi just so they
can check them out again. Guess what they are now quoting me £5,000
less to take my cars than they estimated back in November. Okay
I know we are a few months down the line and I expected some reduction but £5,000 is ridiculous. Both cars are extremely low mileage and I have down no more than 4,000 miles more in the last eight months combined on both cars so what the hell!!!!
Can they do this to me. All I have is an e-mail stating the estimated trade in prices which was sent to me back in November......help someone.
I just feel that now the delivery is almost here they are trying to take the pee. I have on numerous occassions asked for some sort of invoice and kept getting told that this would be given to me nearer delivery time so had no idea but any of this until now - in fact I still don't know the true cost of the car because nothing has been sent to me. terrible.
What do you think guys - what would you do?:zx11:

I'm not sure where you are, but ordering the car back in November and 8 months later it's almost turning up? That's seems excessively long to me, even with Audi delays and wotnot. I would have cancelled the order and went somewhere else.
Why don't you go and sell your cars somewhere else? One other thing: How can you not know the true cost of the car? You should have received a final price when you configured it at the dealer and then you can minus whatever they are giving you for your old cars.

A few factors could come in to play. Do you mind me asking what the two cars are? Remember that newer, larger, big engine cars lose a lot of value in a very short space of time. Also there has been a fair bit of water under the economic bridge since last November, and with the impending car tax revisions the ar$e has fallen out of the second hand car market (again!).
£5000 might seem like a lot, but spread across two vehicles, and an interveneing 8 months, I'm not so sure it is. Sorry that's not what you wanted to hear, hopefully there will be a dissenting voice :(
EDIT: One thing that may help: I have always been very successful in flogging my cars (up to pretty high value £26k), on Autotrader. I refuse to get the crappy trade in values that dealers offer. OK, it's a bit more hassle, but there are still buyers out there. Just make sure you advertise on just the web bit. The magazine rates are a rip-off imo.

It's normally the case that they won't give you firm trade in prices past the end of the calendar month. Used car prices are falling through the floor and the dealers don't really want to know used cars - especially (as it sounds from your post) you are trading in two cars for one new one.
So I'm afraid they can do it to you, I know that is not good news for you. Can you try and sell privately before your car is due for delivery? Might be able to make back some of the £5k deficit.
Sorry its bad news...

I agree, I might still cancel the order if this continues. The reason for the long delay is that I have ordered the S-line but I have been asking for an invoice for ages so that I can see the final costing but guess what they have been delaying it, obviously I have never had any official sort of document detailing breakdown of costs/extras etc. very annoying and now I can see why, apparently they just want to rip me off!!!

Having never bought a brand new car, I'm not too sure how it works. Are bound in any way before you hand any dosh over? If not, tell em to shove it & that you feel you've been misled. If that doesn't get their attantion, not a lot will!
As for your current cars, you'd probably get more for them selling them yourself wouldn't you? There're so many classified papers & websites about.

Thanks for the advice - I have a VW GTI and Mini Cooper Convertible, so neither one of them are big cars and although I appreciate that ecnomoy is suffering I do feel that such a reduction in estimate is just a plane con.
The mileage has barely changed and both cars are in great shape and highly desirable cars.
I could just try advertising the cars in Auto trader and would have down this sooner but after such a long wait Audi suddenly spring on me the car is here early and now I have to suddenly come up with finance - thanks Audi!!!

November 07 to July 08 is 8 months. Most normal cars depreciate at about £200-500 per month after the first 6 months of their life.
If the 5K is split across the 2 cars that's an average of approx £300 per month, which is about right I'm afraid. No dealer would guarantee a trade-in price for more than 5-6 weeks tops to be honest, the market is too fluid to allow them to do that.
So I don't think you're being ripped off - that's the state of the market at the moment.
I agree with the above. Its a kick in nuts but after 8 months across two cars it sounds about right. Dont forget that they have to sell these cars at a profit too. Plus at the time they may have had room for them on their forecourt, perhaps now they dont and dont really want to take them off your hands. All seems like a dodgy deal to me wandering into a dealer 8 months ago to order a car on a finance/verbal agreement on the cost of two cars in 8 months time. Financial state of the country wont help. However, perhaps the dealer now has your signature and deposit on an ordered/built for you car, perhaps if you pull out you will lose the deposit.
Not want you want to hear sorry.

I won't lose my deposit - I have checked with the dealer.

Without wishing to spoil the party, I ordered my new car at the beginning of February and was given a trade in price based on the expected delivery date of early April. I had a written order form which contains a price for the trade in.
My new car did not arrive until the end of May by which time I had crossed the ever important 60k barrier.
As the delay was down to Audi and not me, they stuck by the agreed trade in price. Now you may well say that they had to, but the fact that this was never an issue made me feel good.
The moral of the story I suppose is "get in in writing"!

It's a cliche, but a verbal agreement's as good as the paper it's written on!

Hi, I get glass's Guide ("the trade bible!!!!!!") every month and it makes rather scarey reading at the moment. Just to give you some idea, in the guide this month your GTi (assuming MK5) dropped by £600 and the Mini by £275. That's just in a month!!!!!
Naughty that they didn't price your cars with a serious view on the depreciation as they know this is going to happen, they should have made it very clear at the time but in my veiw that kind of drop is probably quite fair.

I have looked into this is some detail and I have to say Audi are probably being reasonable and the price the figures they have provided me now seem quite fair - in fact after making a bit of noise they came back to me and offered me another £750 on top so better than nothing.
My new S-Line is now on a ship on its way over so not long now!!!!
