Lost 1st & Second Gear!!!

Pulling out of car park yesterday, reverse was a little tight to get into. Re-tried and ok. Then went to go for 1st and nothing there!!! or 2nd either. Stick goes into the gate, but there is no cog there. Pulled away in 3rd and car drove fine in 3rd, 4th 5th & 6th, reverse ok too. No noises or grindingetc.

Any ideas? I'm hoping its a selector or mesh propblem. Spoke with an indy garage, said it may be either, or a cluth or a complete new box!!! They said a clutch alone was an 11hr job!!!

It won’t be the clutch from your description as the other gears would be awkward, probably 1st/2nd selector fork has become detached inside the box but reverse being tight may indicate it is just an external selector fault which is easier to repair.

Thanks crasher - I'm really worried I'm looking at a big bill, but I am hoping it is a selector problem. Are either of those problems 'big' jobs? Do you think I should go to the main dealer or stick with the indy who has been recommended?

I would go to the indi, but then again I am biased as I am an indi!
