While test driving check that there is no engine judder
i.e. like ignition being switched on/off in rapid succession
If this condition exists it is difficult to rectify and it seems mainly
a problem only on 94 models. High milage is no problem to
these engines

have an 80 tdi myself with 210,000 miles, these cars were incredibly well built,
mine is a 92 and the engine still pulls well and all the electrics still work as new.
when i was looking to buy mine i was told to check the front suspension/ bushings/ mounts as apparently
the tdi lump is heavier then the petrol units and hard on the mounts.
The only trouble ive had with mine is with the cooling system but
all these issues were down to rubber hoses perishing and leaking.

I have a '93 80 avant tdi with 186,000 on the clock, I can vouch for the problem with the bushes as I've just put 2 wishbones on mine!, if it pulls to one side under hard acceleration and /or you have knocking noises its usually these bushes to blame.
The only other thing I would recommend you check properly is the cylinder head gasket, this is about the only serious thing the 80 tdi's suffer with, mine had coolant problems a while back and it all boiled down to the head, (and there not cheap to have done!) otherwise, cheap to run, ultra reliable, (even with all the head problems, mine never stopped on me!) If it shows no signs of any of the above you should be ok!!:D

 Hi, i have the dreaded judder, are you sure the 80 tdi has a dual mass flywheel i thought this was only on later a4,s???? iv tried everthing to cure it, its like the timings out of sink! as theres no manual for it its hard to find all relevant sensors!
I think I was pisht when I handed over £700 for it to replace my ultra reliable 93 espace td!!!:zx11:

Hi is yours 1994.?
when you say you tried everything to cure judder
did you get fuel pump tested. this unit can cause juddering
when its electronic parts fail
otherwise these are a brilliant car well worth putting right
Try contacting diesel specialists to see if they can test fuel
pump including its electronic actuater unit
