Hi everyone,

I've finally managed to find a 4GB SD card that works in my Audi A4 b8 Concert system! (it's only meant to handle a maximum of 2GB)

The make is Transcend and you can buy them from Misco. Price is only £13.64 plus delivery and link is here (http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=267150&CatId=87)

Cheers!

Top man.I was asked about this today and have been looking for b8 users who have overcome the 2gb limitation.

I just checked the manual for my Concert radio and there's no mention of any card size limit. It just says that the radio has been tested with many products on the market but not all cards will work. I'm tempted to try a 16GB Transcend card now :D

I too now have the 4gb Transcend SD card working.

However occasionally when starting the car it is not recognised by the MMI.
I have to eject the card and re insert it to get it to be read.

The 2gb cards I have used never had to do this?

Newbie here about to buy a 4gb card...thanks for the tip!

Found it very frustrating that A4 wasn't available with an AUX Input for MP3 playback and I wasn't going to pay for the sat nav just to get the I-Pod interface as I use a TomTom.

However, just heard a rumour that the A4 now comes with an AUX input as standard. Anyone know if this is true? Retrofit would undoubtedly be costly but would be a little peeved that early owners would be penalised.:(

I was in the dealers yesterday and I noticed in the accesories cabinet they had an ipod interface for £99 +vat which they claim fits all new radios.

I beleive the aux input connection was added the week after my build week (week 21)

Thanks for the info.

My dealer was expressing ignorance of all things I pod a couple of weeks ago but tends to be like that for many things!

Just noticed on another thread that someone got AMI retrofitted recently for their I-Pod (all the basic kit is evidently in the car, might be the same as you mentioned?) and it is now a £200 option on any radio, you don't need the £2k DVD option. Common sense at last?

EDIT- Just been quoted £199 plus VAT for an I-Pod interface to the main system. Awaiting more info from the dealer....

Your right! Annoyed me as they said i couldn't have the AMI without the Sat Nav so had to take it off, have contacted my dealer and they are finding out if it can be re-instated as a option

Read the posts on these boards where people have had AMI retro-fitted. I've just been in contact with my dealer as my car is due to be delivered tomorrow (at last!). They've told me I can't have AMI retro-fitted.

Could anyone recommend a dealer in the south (Surrey) area that has actually offered to retro-fit the AMI?

model year 2009 (cars after build week 22 i think) have a 3.5mm AUX connector in the space under the arm-rest. my car delivered at the begining of this month has it.

on the AMI front there is an AMI retro-fit available for "MMI High" ie the real MMI you get with sat nav but there is apparently a retro-fit available for non sat nav (CAN bus) cars however i havent been able to get much info on this from the dealer or anywhere else!

I had only one SD card at hand when I recieved my A4.
It was 4GB and it worked like a charm:Blush:

It was a mini SD with an SD adapter. Normally it was in use on my former HTC S200 cell phone.

Hi Folks,

just to report you that I tried the 4 GB SDHC Card...and unfortunately it doesn't work:(:(:(.

I tyried both MP4 and MP3 format but nothing, the A4 Concert "alambic" read as empty the SD Device.

Probably is correct what indicated in this forum, that it works with SD cards only, not with SDHC Card...

So I'm goint to try a 2 GB SD Card.

QUESTION: what format do you use on SD Cards? MP3 or MP4...or WMA???

Thanks in advance,

enzo

I am not sure what kind of card I used. It is probably not sdhc.
It was a mini SD 4GB with an SD adapter. Maybe I can take a picture?

The files I use are mp3 encoded at 320kbs.

Hello Bambadoo!!!

Today I used a "normal" 2 GB SD Card and finally I got my Concert running by SD. I used MP3 format at 156 kbps (if I remember fine...)

The issue is that in Milan, where I live, it seems is impossible to find SD Card with the size of 4 GB...

The 4 GB SD card available in the shop are all SDHC...

I will try again...otherwise I will buy a 4 GB SD card via e-commerce.

The important think is that my concert is running today, even if with a 2 GB SD, because tomorrow I will leave for vacation time!!!!

So, thank for your reply and hear you soon!!!

:biglaugh:

Bye!

Thanks guys, decided to go for another A4 avant because the Q5 hasn't got AMI or SD card slot unless you order the £2k Sat Nav. Two questions..
1) What are the chances of a retro fit AMI on a non MMI Q5?
2) How are the albums / tracks displayed on the SD card, is it visible and does it scroll via artist and song on the 6.5" screen?
:beerchug:

chuno
07-10-2008, 08:21 AM
Yes it is visible, just looks like a file explorer type interface, with files and directories in a list. When I loaded up my SD card, it automatically started playing MP3s from the directory lowest in the alphabet (in my case "60s"). You can then scroll and select the "go up" icon and start exploring from there. It can also be controlled from the steering wheel and then a similar interface appears on the instrument screen.

Just perfect!!! I inserted a Transcend 4GB SD Card and it is running perfectly!!! Now I have MP3 file on 4 GB SD Card and on 2 additional 2GB SD Cards I previously charged.

So I put all my music library on 8 GB SD Card and I am able to listen all my favourite songs while I am driving!!!:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:

As for kids' music, luckily some pirate radio programme on CBeebies is teaching my little one all about real music, like She's A Rainbow by the Stones which she adores. She has pretty good taste, loves "the Shrek song" i.e. Hallelujah written by Leonard Cohen. Although we may have to put The Gruffalo on as well, just in case...

Hi all, I'm a little confused by this thread. I have just picked up a new A4 Avant S-Line 2.0TDI (143) and for the life of me can't find these SD card slots.

It has Nav plus and Bluetooth High so there is no concert or symphony radio - instead it has a 6CD changer and all MMI controls are at the gear stick. I have an Aux socket in the centre armrest but thats about it...any ideas where I can find the SD slots????

One final thing - my changer does not play MP3 files - is there a trick and format to make this work.

Thanks very much in advance.!

If you have Nav Plus, then you don't have any SD slot :(

Audi do seem to make things confusing with their audio kit. My new Symphony unit has, like the 2008 unit, a slot for SD and with the AMI has an abundance of sources which seems bizarre when the nav unit misses SD provision.

Oh and my 2008 unit played mp3 ok, windows media files, showed the folders etc. Presume the 2009 unit is the same.

I bought two 4Gb SD cards for my car on order as they seem to be getting harder to find as everyone's going to SDHC which the car can't handle.

I've not added SatNav so if anyone wants a pair of them for less than I paid, let me know. I paid £13 delivered.

Update: The Nav Plus does NOT have SD - I had this confirmed by the garage. The MP3 wouldn't play if I used Nero but when burnt with iTunes it was perfect. It also takes at least 5 mins to load from the CD the first time. AMI is being fitted Monday by CraigB so can't wait.!!;)

Hi all, what I would say is just because you have a 4GB card it does not necessarily mean that your system will play all the tracks on it! I've read a few different threads on this and no one seems to know for definite why!? Some say it's to do with the total number of folders, others say it's the total number of tracks, and then there's those that say it's to do with the characters used in the filenames.

I've got 2 Transcend 4GB SD (not SDHC) cards and although my sound system will read them (it was a sat nav retro fit in a 2005 A4 Avant) I'm still trying to figure out why some of my music is missing.

I've slowly been deleting music from the cards and tracks/ folders start to appear but others are still missing.

Anyone else come across this? Is it something to do with the 2GB limitation I see people talking about (it's only using the first 2GB of my 4GB card) or is there some truth in the total folders/ files/ special characters 'rumours'?

Joe9T

From the handbook (A4 Cab MMC) it looks like 400 files "and/or" 256 folders are the limits. I'll test this out with some numbered files and see what happens. I guess a way round it is to create preferred playlists and concatenate all the individual files into one file.

It may potentially have something to do with the way standard SD cards address memory, it may be the Audi system is unable to access the full 4GB.

Just hazarding a guess as I know many operating systems are unable to address 4GB of RAM.

Came over this firmware update on PirateBay: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4486178/Audi_A3_A4_A6_RNS-E_Firmware_SW0650___SW0660

New features in SW 0650 are:

1) altimeter (like MMI)
2) no 400 files limit on SD cards
3) more sound settings (bass, highs, middle)
4) navi announcement from both speaker (left/right)
5) title scrolling in the DIS
This is probably something you guys know about, but could that be the solution to have all files on a 4GB card shown?

Are the mp3 files downloaded from a site which embeds DRM protection? If so, they will not be playable in your car. If not, try a different card - maybe a 2Gb SD - to see if it's a card compatibility issue.

Edit - just read the initial post again. Ignore the last part about trying a different card!

Silly question, but does your AMI not have a USB interface? if they have why not just use a 2.5inch HDD in a USB caddy? I'm using a 160GB ex-laptop HDD ina silverstile caddy, I have loaded all my 15,986 tracks, thats my whole CD collection and more and it works great!! I have formatted it as fat32 which gives me 149GB of space, loaded on folders, AAA,BBB to ZZZ and put Artists into each letterred folder, so finding stuff is only at worst case 3 folders deep, works a treat, no messing around with expensive SD cards lol :D

I now have the Transcend 4GB "standard" SD card working fine.

Purely from curiousity and not expecting a really sensible reply (I wasn't disappointed)I e mailed Audi and asked them. Their reply is below:-

"Thank you for your recent email.

I have spoken to our specialist team and they have informed me that the maximum size the SD Card reader will take in your vehicle is 2GB.

Unfortunately not all SD Cards are compatible as Audi are unable to test all the SD Cards that are currently on the market. I do know that Scan Disc SD Cards work but not the SD HD Cards."

I pointed out to them that their own manual actually states that 4GB is supported!

Bye for now!!

Having succesfully been able to buy and use Transcend cards for months, it seems that they are now impossible to find for reasonable money in the UK. So, Ive placed an order here, where they were about £18 each. http://www.memorysuppliers.com/tr4gbsdsedin.html
Site looks professional. Will report back when and if they arrive.

Hi,

New here so apologies if this question has been answered a million times!

Just ordered a TDIe due for delivery in March. Does anyone know whether larger cards / hd will work with this model (think it is the concert system)? - I can still order standard 8 Gig SD cards.

Also will the iPod work ok using the aux input?

Thanks in advance

Darren

I currently have an 8GB SDHC card in my "slot" (ahem) and it works fine. As I understand it (and I'm NO expert), the limiting factor is the number of files (or folders) on the card, not the actual capacity of the card. The Audi Symphony system will only accommodate 512 folders at the root level on the SD card so if you store all the tracks as individual files on the root of the card then your limit (obviously enough) will be 512 tracks or songs.

However, if you store the songs in folders (perhaps by album or alphabetic groups by artist [A-E, F-J etc etc]) the limiting factor becomes the capacity on the card, in my case 8Gb of music, providing the number of folders stored on the root of the card doesn't exceed 512.

In my case I have chosen to store the tracks by artist name in 4 alphabetically arranged groups A-E, F-K, M-R & S-Z so I have 4 folders at the root of my SD card. Within those folders each artist's songs are then stored and I have approximately 1500 tracks available to me. The Audi system will allow navigation around the groups as it duplicates the file structure onto the Infotainment screen.

I hope this works for you guys, it certainly works for me, its taken a little bit of fiddling around to get it to work as you do need to organise the tracks but its worth it in the end. If anyone has a 16GB card please let me know how you get on.

Good luck!

Intrigued about the number of tracks limited to 512 versus using folders. Will try.

Now Im confused. Is there a difference in card support between the old RNSe system in the 08 A4 and the newer audio systems (that include an SD card slot) in the current car ? I cant make my 08 A RNSe (Sat nav, twin SD cards etc) support anything bigger than 4gb NON-HC SD.

Yes, there is a difference. The old RNSe systems in A4 B6 and B7 models will officially support only 2Gb non HC SD cards, but as you may have gathered, many folks on here have found that Transcend 4Gb SD (not SDHC) cars will work fine.

The newer audio systems in A4 B8 models, and the spiffy new RNSe fitted to the very latest A3s and TTs do support SDHC cards with higher capacities, though.

MF.

I tried Sandisk Video HD 8GB cost me £35.00 from Curry cos I need it in a hurry with madness that day. Not readable!!
Tried a 4GB MicroSD with SD Adapter, not readable.

512MB MicroSD with SD Adapter, OK
1GB KingstonMicro SD with SD Adapter, OK
2GB Sandisk SD Ultra II, OK

Bear in my mind, seems all SD card labelled as "SD" and FAT format OK,
anything as SDHC or FAT16 or higher, cannot be Read.
Purely personal experience, not guaranteed!

But happy to see you guys reported Transcend 4GB OK!!

Hi, thanks for your reply.
It is an 58 plate Avant 2.0TDi S-Line
Audi Concert, no Navi.
Seems I have to find an excuse to get the software updated to 0310 as I found on this forum.

At the next service refer your dealer to page 75 of the A4 brochure:

I currently use an 8gb Transcend SDHC on my A4 which was delivered in April 2009. It has the 'standard' Audi concert system.

Never had any problem with the card at all.

Have something like 140+ albums on it & it ain't full yet!

Got mine from Amazon Uk. Seemed to be the cheapest for me. :beerchug:

PS Before the 8gb, I had a 4gb Transcend SDHC. I never had any probs with that 1 either and only changed it because I wanted a bigger card :D

PPS My computer runs windows XP and I copy and paste from a file in my documents direct onto the SDHC card. Never had a problem doing it this way with the card or in the A4 in the track display thingy!

If anyone is looking for the fabled Transcend 4gb cards that are not SDHC I think they are here for a good price..

Look at page 2 of the SD Cards.

Hopefully will help someone out as they seem v hard to source at a reasonable price.

Scotty's sound like a great deal, as they are new and unused. I am currently running a pair of Transcend 4Gb SD cards (not SDHC) in my A6 C7, but as my car will read SDHC cards too, it seems selfish of me to hang onto them if other forum members are desperate to get hold of them. If anyone wants to swap them for some (good quality) SDHC cards, send me a PM and we can sort out switching. The cards I have are not new - I bought them in April 2009 to use in my A6 C6 and I have had them in use in my C6 and C7 since then, but I can confirm that they work and are reliable :)

Cheers!

MF.

I know it's digging up an old thread but it proved very helpful to me. I ordered 1 of the 4Gb cards as per the link above and got it today. Formatted it to FAT32 then dropped a load of MP3's on it and it works a treat. I did format to NTFS but that didn't work.

I'm still using then myself too, got about 8 of them now. No need to format them though, they work just fine as they are. I pop them in my card reader and a window opens on my desktop, just a case then of dragging and dropping MP3's on it.

The MP3's corrupted when I tried to copy them over out of the packet. After Formatting the card, I could copy over ok and play them in the car :)
