Reverse gear problem

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have just bought an A6 SE Tdi (auto)27,000 miles in an auction. Reverse gear will not select. The gaurantee is up! "R" light comes on in the dash and on the box display OK.

Hope there is a simple (and cheap!) fix.
