The band inside the turbo, which varies the boost sticks. Mine went,it used to make a funny noise up to 1800 rpm, at which point it would either go quiet and be ok , or the power would reduce quite dramatically, which could only be reset by restarting the engine. A new turbo cured it. Turbo problems are widespread on both 130 and 174 T5's- pretty much on a par with the water pump issues.

hi mick how many miles had you done before replacing your turbo. mine was missing/holding back when it hit 1800 rpm for some time. then it blew a inter cooler hose then a week later it blew the inter cooler . best i take it to vw i think then or any one know any good independants in hampshire

I think it was a bit over 40000 miles. It took them weeks to sort it- they swapped just about everything else first, including the exhaust which they reckoned may be clogged up with soot. The staff were inherited from the LDV agency they had held previously (it was some time ago). VW revoked the franchise, thankfully. I think i would try a turbo specialist for an exchange one, or if your very brave i think they can be taken apart and freed off.

Sticking VNT vanes is a common problem on TDI rurbos, especially those that are driven gently all the time. IIRC it seems to happen to the 4 cyl motors more than the 5 cyl. Maybe the 5 cyl purchasers like to boot it more frequently, whereas the 4 cyl lot are looking for maximum fuel economy all the time ;)

At 91,000 miles I'd be happy to replace the turbo if it was at fault (I'm guessing you are no longer covered by VW warranty). Typical symptoms are overboosting around 2,000rpm, causing the ECU to protect the engine by going into "limp home" mode with drastically reduced power).
