T25 Gearbox Question

Hi i'm new on here and just have a question about the VW T25 camper gearbox, I recently bought a 1988 1.6 T25 camper, is it normal in these to get into 1st gear by moving the gear stick backwards as every other car i've ever driven to get into 1st gear you shift the gear stick forwards! just askin cause a few people i mentioned this to who'd had other VW vans said that it was strange that the gears were this way round:confused:

I've been all over the web trying to find out the answer to this but havnt managed to find the info so any help would be much apreciated:o

That's a rare five speed then, yes the dog leg first is normal and you will get used to it. My auto Beetle also has a dog leg first.
