steering squeels on full lock!

not a huge problem but iv noticed when the wheel is at full turn theres a prettynasty sounding squeal.
i also noticed this on an old GTI, which made the noise on the smallest of turns, i was offered for £200 (!!!) but turned it down as i wasnt sure if it was serious.
the guy selling it said it was probbaly just a loose belt on the power steering system but noone was convinced. any suggestions?:confused:
