I have been getting a noise i can only describe as a ching ching when going over bumpy roads at certain speeds as described in an earlier thread, I have jacked the car up & had a look & all i can see is a split rubber which may be the cause, What i need to know is what it is & how much am i looking at, I've attatched two photos so hopefully these will help.:beerchug:

you'd really need to pop that ball joint out and just see how much slop/freeplay is on it , if its really loose replace the whole arm.But it could be 1 of a few components that can be knocking as the passats front suspension leaves alot to be desired.

Is it something i could do myself or do i need specialist tools? Also does anyone know a rough figure a garage would charge for doing this for me? Also it doesn't appear to be a knocking sound, more like a metalic ching ching but the noise dissapears when braking over bumps

that's not the problem you describe.
ok,the rubber is torn but from the photo it looks as if that's all that is wrong there.
is their any movent on the joint? it looks fine from here.
stuff like that would give bad steering/handling/tyre wear, non of which
you mention.
are you sure it's not just the exhaust that is catching somewhere?

It does sound as though something could be loose but i can't find anything obvious, the split rubber is all i could find, what is the rubber? i'm no mechanic

above the rubber you have a tapered joint ,which is usually difficult to release and normally doesn't wear because when tight their is no movement between the two parts. below the rubber, you have a ball,( which is the other end of the tapered joint,it's all one piece).
this ball rotates in a bearing which surrounds it,and is "greased for life"
at manufacture. the rubber is there simply to keep water and debris out of the ball/bearing below.
the fact that the rubber is split doesn't necessarily mean that the joint below has failed.

Even as STEWY L says the ball joint may not be damaged the only true way to check is to drop the ball joint and check for wear.

It is a straight forward job, you will need a ball joint splitter readily available form most motor factors plus a combination spanner to remove the nut off the ball joint.

Once you have dropped the ball joint down you will be able to feel if there is any wear in it and if so you will need to change the whole arm i'm afraid.

Mr Hayne's manual does give you a step by step guide to do this job so would be worth buying.

Good luck. :biggthump

Hi
I had the same problem when going over bumpy roads which was caused by the anti roll bar links worth checking as its a cheap and easy diy repair

That ball joint needs to be done sooner rather than later the rubber boot keeps the dirt out of the joint so by now ur grease inside the joint will be like grinding paste same thing that happens to cv joints. You can check for wear without splitting the arm from hub carrier by putting car on axle stands get a big bar and try to lever the lower arm up and down any play and its sconed which will lead to a premature death for the tyre on that side.a replacement q&h arm is about £35 anti roll bar drop links are more of a clunk than a ching ching a wild stab in the dark would br to check ur anti rattle springs havent popped of the brake caliper this is very ching ching on cobbled roads

Just went down to the local garage & told them about the noise & said that the noise disapears when braking so they reckon it's the pads & when they wear the callipers rattle, never heard this before, has anyone else?

The calipers dont rattle the pads do this is why they have anti-rattle clips on the caliper
