This is a ticking noise proportional to engine speed, on weak FM stations. I would put it down to the ignition system except that it is a diesel.

Searching the internet suggests interference from the alternator would be a whine rather than a tick. Maybe I should replace the alternator brushes anyway - they have done 162000 miles.

Could the aerial amplifier have failed? FM reception has not been good outside big towns for a year or so.

You might check the antenna itself for corrosion; I checked mine a few months ago and the thing just fell apart in my hands :-(

Still, it makes for a quiet life . OD

I tried a different antenna - it made it worse.

I have decided I was wrong in that it is not proportional to engine speed but to road speed. Apart from the speedometer I can't think of any electrical device dependent on speed.

I love a challenge - I'll think about this one, Chris :-)
