I've just bought a Mk3 Avantgarde Cabrio (94 M) and my insurer is asking for proof that an immobiliser is fitted before they'll cover it for theft. None of the documentation that came with the car mentions an immobiliser. Can anyone tell me how I can find out that it's got an immobiliser and how I can prove it?

It has an alarm with a fob that activates central locking.

Is it an aftermarket immob or a VW factory fit (easiest way to tell is to look for manufacturers name on key fob)?

If it is an aftermarket then it should have come with a document that proves it has been fitted to the car (generally signed by the fitter). You should have this in the bundle of documents that you received with the car. If this diocument is missing then it gets a bit tricky to prove you have the alarm. Maybe you can contact the manufacturer, fitter or previous owner (if you can find them) and see if they can provide a new certificate?

If it is an original VW system then a dealer should be able to help you out.

Cheers,
