Hi,

I have a question about wheel and tyre widths. I have 8x19" rims with 235/35/19 tyres. I know what the various numbers refer to, but can't seem to work out the relationship between the tyre width and the rim width. I have seen other wheels which have the same tyres but on 9.5x19" rims. 8" is 203 mm and 9.5" is 241 mm. What determines the width of tyre that can be fitted to a certain width of rim?

Cheers,
Ade

Every tyre made is capable of fitting a selection of rim widths, they have a tolerance range so there is no definitive answer to your question, to add to this the tyre measurements aren't precise either. IE a 235/45R17 tyre wont be exactly 235mm wide, the tyre manufacturers have a tolerance they have to be inbetween which is governed by the ETRTO (European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation). An example of this is the Volvo V70, we were unable to fit 17 inch Dunlops as the fouled the rear arches but the same size in Pirelli fits fine.

So after a lot of waffle there is do difinitive answer to your question!
Sorry
