Hi there,
My P-reg Golf GTi has started to cut out. Whenever it feels like it - moments after starting up in the morning, on the petrol forecourt and best of all, in the fast lane of the motorway. All the power goes including brakes and steering. Sometime it won't restart immediately. It's been on the diagnostic - nothing. I've had the coil replaced and am considering having a new distributor fitted. Will it work? Any ideas? Anyone?

For what it's worth, I had an Audi 100 CD Avant (2.2 litre, 5 cylinder beast of a car!) a few years ago and a similar symptom happened to me.

It ended up being a cracked distributor cap. Check the inside of the cap for signs of arcing. Worth a try at least.

Herby.

Does the car cut out when the RPM meter needle drops below a 1000 rpm....

If so you have the VW COMMON PROBLEM of THROTTLE BODY...You'll have to get the Throttle body cleaned out...

hope this helps mate

fuel pump relay might be heating up and losing contact on circut board(happens on vw's)fuel filter blocked, fuel pump faulty or pickup in tank blocked but pumps on mk3 also wear out.Open hatch lift boot mat and start car, does the pump whirr(right side of boot near backseat) or sound like it stops and goes(get someone to steadyidle car to 3000 revs but dont rev it). There is a cigar shaped device(idle stabelizer valve)in the centre of the inlet manifold that wears out this part works as it's name implies while your car runs.Faults can be intermittent with it and the only way to try before subsituting it is to remove it and spray a light film of wd40 inside the propeller side(other side is sealed)and test drive it and if the fault doesent occur for the drive like it usually does then its faulty but if no diffirence occurs inspect my other suggestions.

i agree with passat boy about the fuel filter being blocked. i had have just had a coil replaced 2 months ago but started fine it was when i driving over 70 (well we will say over 60 for leagal reasons) that there was a problem, but on my last car i had a blocked fuel filter and cut out as you said on motorway at end of street and had to be towed several times but then would start fine next day for several miles i would defo give this a look as a pice of fuel pipe might save you alot of time and expence..

New filter and pipe would cost around £15

Hope this helps
