Suspected valve damage so the head is coming off.
What tips can anyone offer?
I have heard that it should not be skimmed before replacing, any thoughts on this?
When timing the injector pump is it possible without Vag.com electrics,
can it be done just with a dial gauge kit?
Thanks for any information..

Replace the valve stem seals and lap all the valve seats again. Also get new camshaft oil seal as well + a new watter pump, belts + tensioners, new lifters and head bolts. Change the oil and filter as well. You will need vag com to tune the engine dynamically as static timing will put the cars timing in the approximate position to get it started. Correct timing is few millimeters either way of the static timing...

And the head, if it can/should be skimmed?

Hi, if you can get thicker head gasket then you can skim it, dont see no reason why it should not be skimmed. Basically, you need to keep the same or lower the compression ratio so you dont do damage to the engine. Go to euro car parts and ask for a 2/3 hole head gasket assuming yours is just one hole(standard) and ask the thickness differences between them. The difference between the 1 hole and the 3 hole gasket is your machining margin... Is the head warped/distorted ? The reason i ask is the Tdi heads are much stronger than petrol ones and dont warp as easy, ussualy a new gasket does it most of the time !

hy
You have to check what head gasket you have (how many holes are in the side of the gasket) if you got thikk gasket you cant't skimm the head
but any way I don't recoment skimming it, it's not worth the money. trust me I have 4 years experience on vw vans. and theck con-rod bearring bolts they have bad habit to snap whet pistons meet valves.
best of luck
