My van is playing up at the moment. Had a problem with water pressure now fixed, however the van is now smoking. It is not all the time though. It does smell very fumey all the time. Smokes normally when it starts up and then dies down when it is up to temperature. It is using about a litre of oil a week. Brought the van as it has low miles and has service history, i seem to be spending more time on it fixing problems.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be? our local dealer said to take it in when it is smoking for a pressure test but don't know when it will start smoking a again.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

It does smell very fumey all the time.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

A simple problem/solution with my van, smelling a bit fumey, was that I was closing a cable across the rubber seal of the air vent as I closed the bonnet, it needed tucking away and clipping to the body.
You dont really see it when the bonnet is open but you can see the impression on the seal from where the cable has been sitting.
This misplaced cable allowed some of the air from the engine bay into the ventilation system of the van.
There may be other problems/causes but its worth looking out for this one too.

Have taken van to a diesel specialist, have been told it is either valve guide seal or ring. So it looks like the head is coming off.

Anybody got any advice on taking off the head and what i should be looking for on the rings?

Fingers crossed

Had same problem following recent purchase of T4 2.4 Diesel. One week later engine packed up and two out of the five valves have seized and the head has got to come off and be skimmed or replaced.

Friend of mine is a mechanic and said he would help put new head or skimmed one back on but having spent the last few weekends trying to strip it all out it is a nightmare job and I am considering cutting my losses and finding a volkswagen/bosch specialist to do the work.

Particular problem is removing the fuel pum and have managed to get one of the friction springs off the exhaust manifold but offside one is a nightmare and still trying to sus it out.

If you can afford it get a garage to do it.

good luck bertvan

Thanks for the bit of advice, unfortunately will have to do it myself as the vw specialist wanted £1500 just to take the head off not including parts. Hope you get yours sorted.

Head is off took me all day what a nightmare job. Nightmare is not over yet. Found out what the problem is. One of the piston rings has had it, so am in the process of trying to remove the sump with engine in place.

Does anyone know if you can remove the sump with the engine in place, and if you can how to? I have been trying for hours and seems stuck at one end next to the gearbox, all the bolts are out but does not want to move.

Help me!

Also if i can get it off does anyone know how to put the exhaust springs back?

Thanks
