right, the engine management light came on today. so, fault codes downloaded as follows:

Address 01: Engine
Controller: 8E0 909 518 AA
Component: 1.8L R4/5VT 0004
Coding: 0011504
Shop #: WSC 00022
3 Faults Found:
16891 - Idle Control System RPM Higher than Expected.
P0507 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent
17705 - Pressure Drop between Turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!)
P1297 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded
17544 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Lean
P1136 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded
Readiness: 0000 1100

ross tech wiki extracts for the codes:

16891/P0507/001287 - Idle Control System RPM: Higher than Expected.

Possible Symptoms

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) active
Possible Causes

Throttle Valve Control Module (J338) dirty/faulty
Wiring/Connector(s) from/to Throttle Valve Control Module (J338)
Possible Solutions

Check Throttle Valve Control Module (J338)
Check Wiring/Connector(s) from/to Throttle Valve Control Module (J338)

17705/P1297/004759 - Pressure Drop between Turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!)

Possible Symptoms

Power Loss
Possible Causes

Leaking hoses and/or pipes between components
Check Boost Pressure Control Valve (N249)
Possible Solutions

Check hoses and/or pipes between components
Check / Replace Boost Pressure Control Valve (N249)
Check / clean Throttle Valve, do Throttle Body Alignment
Special Notes

Did anyone fitted an extra (wrong) dump valve?

17544/P1136/004406 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Lean

Possible Solutions

Check Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor
Check Fuel Pressure Regulator
Check Fuel Pump
Check Intake/Exhaust System for Leaks
Check Secondary Air Injection for Leaks
Check Vacuum Lines for Leaks

it seems that there is a problem with the throttle control valve J338, is this also known as the N75 Valve?

i have read that the 17705 fault seems to be pretty common and can be a bit like pushing water uphill when trying to cure it.

leaky hoses
dirty throttle control valve
realign throttle bodies via vag com. can this go really wrong?
possible coil packs (apparently??)

anyway, thanks for reading this (if you have made it this far)

is there anything else i should be checking?

where can i buy these n249 and j338 valves apart from audi, vagproducts wasnt much help.

thanks in advance.

Classic dirty throttle body.
Remove the throttle body and clean it.
Clear the adaption learnt values.
Reset the throttle body adaption.
Turn the ignition off for 60 secs and restart.

All these fault codes relate to the butterfly flap bouncing due to carbon build up so the lambda sees incorrect intake mixture and the recirc sees vacuum drop.

Have you tried reseting the light to see if they return ? As some could be there from ages ago.

I just used carburetor cleaner on mine and bought a new gasket for 50p.

when i got the car, codes 16891 & 17544 were there, so i cleared them.

then the light came on, all three codes were there. im guessing the 17705 one bought the light on, or maybe it was because there were three faults?

i have cleared the codes again, and as yet, my 35 mile trip to work has not brought the light back on, but will check the codes again tonight.

thanks for the advice guys,

the ross-tech advice says that the throttle body alignment can be damaging, is this procedure pretty risk free or not?

thanks.

Ive done it a few time an not had any problems

Throttle Body Alignment
Turn the key on but do not start the car.

01 - Engine]
[Measuring Blocks - 08]
Group 060 (may be Group 098 on cable-throttle cars)
[Go!]
[Switch to basic settings]

Once you do this you will see the top right display say ADP RUN. The TB adaptation is being done as soon as you switch to basic settings. You will see the values change and hear the TB cycle for the first few seconds then it will stop. Leave it in Basic Settings for about 30 seconds, then press the [Switch to measuring blocks] button and you're all set.

Be sure not to touch the accelerator and make sure the engine is NOT running when you do this!

great, thanks :)

will probably attempt a throttle body clean and alignment either later tonight.
