I understand that A8s are susceptible to gearbox problems. I bought a 1999 one which had "had the gearbox done at a cost of £2k", However, after about 3000 miles it has suddenly started to jump out of gear when changing from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd - or perhaps it is the clutch. I am told that the gearbox is a sealed unit and only Audi can change oil/fluid. Can anyone shed light on my problem please before I start spending loads of money? Thanks, Phil.

Doesn't need to be done by Audi but DOES need genuine Audi Fluid - No other. see audipages.com for full job.

I have had the fluid changed (along with the strainer etc) but I still have a problem. It is almost as if the car misses a gear when changing up sometimes. Often it is OK and then suddenly, when accelerating, the revs will soar as it tries to change up, usually from 2nd to 3rd. The problem also occurs when pulling away when I will get a thump after a few yards as if the car has changed down into 1st and dropped the clutch violently. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is? Failing that does anyone know a gearbox specialist who is familiar with the A8 gearbox? I am not keen to take it back to Audi dealer unless I can avoid it as I am not sure my bank balance could stand it. Thanks.
