The gauges on my 1999 GLX TDi have all decided to go on strike. Everything else on the dash works but the dials refuse to join in. Any ideas?

I've had the car since new and apart from an airflow meter this is the first thing to go adrift in 140,000 miles so can't grumble really

Try www.briskoda.net. More Octavia specific.

Having the same problems with my 1998 Octavia 1.9 TDS, Speedo, Fuel guage, Rev meter and Temperature guages have all stopped working, on banging the cowl above the speedo they all started working again, but only temporarily, I took the car to my local garage, who informed me its a fault in the speedo head and the whole unit will need replacing, and they will try to locate me one from a local breakers yard, I will keep you informed of any developments, costs etc. Good luck and I hope you find a solution to your problem.

Found a work around on the BRISKODA forum (Thanks for the info mluton) where you remove one of the instrument fuses on the fuse panel (11 or 15 from memory but it is a 5amp fuse) which fixes the problem after a fashion. The trip details, clock etc all reset to zero when you turn off the ignition and the fuel gauge, tacho all continue to read the same as when turned off (re-setting to zero when you re-start). When you are driving the dials work. Odd but it seems to work

Took car to a local garage, they did the usual diagnosics, it turned out the cluster was faulty, they located one from a local breaker and fitted it, it did not work because the unit is coded to the car. They found a firm that refurbishes the original speedo for £200 and they disable the coding, it takes about 4 or 5 days and the speedo is returned, with a 12 month warranty, and a plus point is the speedo still retains the correct total mileage (in my case 122K). I had to pay twice for the refitting, total cost was £392. Hope this is of some help.

I take it the garage wasn't a VW specialist then, as that's very common knowledge. A quick search here/briskoda can reveal that info :D

Glad you got it fixed in the end though.

Can you give/pm me the name of the company please, also what did you do with the 2nd hand dash pod?

Greg.
