The Fox, Volkswagen’s new entry level small car, will make its international debut tomorrow at the Leipzig Motor Show in Germany, ahead of a European launch in late April and a UK introduction at the start of 2006.

The Fox is a city car designed to give customers exceptional spaciousness in a high-value, high-quality package. At 3.82 metres, it is longer than a Lupo but shorter than a Polo. Its height of 1.54 metres is very competitive within its class, liberating impressive amounts of space inside.

Simplicity will be key to the Fox. It will be offered with three doors and a choice of three engines – two petrol units and one diesel. The petrol engine range comprises a 1.2-litre 55 PS and a 1.4-litre 75 PS, while the diesel option is a 1.4-litre TDI 75 PS, using Volkswagen’s Pumpe Düse unit injector technology.

The Fox harnesses traditional Volkswagen values of robust build and dependability, with a fully galvanised steel body and extensive use of laser welding. Inside, there is generous accommodation for four adults, while the sliding rear bench – which moves a full 15 cms lengthways and is split 50/50 – allows still more flexibility. With its surprising levels of interior space, the Fox is not a car that needs to be confined to city streets, and is more than suited to long journeys.

UK prices for the Fox, along with specification levels, will be announced closer to the car’s launch early next year, and are expected to be competitive within its segment.

The new Polo, of which the first official pictures were released earlier this month, will also be unveiled at the show, ahead of a UK launch in June.
