Hi im new to the world of forums and also all things VW. I have brought a second hand polo 1.4 tdi, yr 2000. I have to say quite an impressive engine for a 3 cylinder.
I have started having a few cold starting problems with it, the glow light would go out and i try to start it. It would fire once then stop. I would try to start it again and it would require 10 or 15 seconds before it would start and then runs ok. But the glow pug light would flash on the dash continuously.

I have decied to avoit the garages and use basic instrinct. I have procced to replace the glow plugs, which seems to have solved the starting issue. But the light still flashes on the dash. Could it be another component causing the fault? or

Having read some previous "threads" on the forum and trying to get my head around 'vag-com' (apparently available as shareware) and what it offers would i be correct in saying that:

Once a fault is logged by the car to the ecu (i think) does it then stay in the memory until the car is connected to a computer to clear the log from the memory?

If so to connect the car to my laptop i need a lead, what is the reference of the lead. I have found a purple socket 15 or 16 pin located behind the cigarette tray in the center console.

sorry for my ignorance, but one has to start somewhere. I saw reference to a MAF which if my research is correct stands for Mass Air Flow (meter) IT helps (me) a lot if you expand the abbreviation after the first use. being new to forums n all that.

as above, vagcom is the way to go (as everyone knows i love vagcom ;))

if you're looking for a good seller for the lead, try Alpha bid on ebay, hes an excellent seller and has supplied all my vehicle diagnostic machines.
