anti roll bar drop link fitting

I have just tried to change the drop links on my 1997 Vento TDi and couldn't work out how the links will come off the end of the antiroll bar as it is so close to the CV joint boot. Also the replacement parts will need a good purchase on them to get the 17mm internal diam bush to fit on the 20mm roll bar. It isn't quite as easy as the Haynes manual makes out. Has anyone done this. I could not get one side to rotate on the bar so didn't even attempt to remove it. Do I need to cut these off? It would be nice if the bar can be rotated downward to get at the ends better but the lower wishbone gets in the way.
