i have a 2001 passat tdi 130 AWX with 108k on and it seems to be getting poor on fuel if to go a 100 mile run and stick to about 70 i get about 46 mpg but around town it is down to about 23 mpg with a round and about avrage of about 29 - 30 there are no stored faults in the ecu and no split hoses ect but there if a bit of fuel smoke on hard acceleration or at low speeds when the engine is under load

i used to get 200 - 230 miles from 20 quids worth mainly dual carriageways 60 to 70 mph . with rising fuel costs i now have to put 30 quids worth in to get roughly the same mpg .

23 is low , but 46 at 70 mph seems high - parkers lists this model at 47 mpg at 56 mph .

seems we all get different mpg from our cars . weird . the turbo use around town would explain alot though , as it dont spool up much if at all when coasting along at 70 mph.

At a constant 70 mph mine shows 48 mpg, which coincidentally (or not) is also my overall average.

46mpg @ 70mph doesn't sound bad, but your mpg around town is a bit on the low side...depending on your driving style, of course.

Mine averages high 30s around town, but I am very careful with it.

I would be fairly happy with 45-48mpg on mway, mine is best on A roads - average speed around 60 mph i get 50 mpg. Around town i get about 35mpg, could easily get it in low 20's with a heavy right foot!!

How can all are cars be so different ?

On a long motor way journey at a steady 75mph I get into the mid 50's my record being 56mpg coming back from Reading.

Around town I average about 37mpg. Mine is the sport with the 6 speed box and as I understand it the engine tuned for a little more torque, could that be the reason why ?

MIne averaged 44mpg,(estate) mixed driving

Could see over 50mpg on a motorway run at 65

All OUR cars can be different because we all drive differently...different routes, different styles etc. My figures (for 130 estate) are very similar to yours - only 5 speed box on mine though.

I keep a very accurate spreadsheet on my MPG and always calculate it on a per tank basis.

I have got as an average 39.41 over 31,347 miles.

My car is a 2002 AWX engined TDI 5 speed Passat Estate.

As above it is mainly down to driving style. I can easily see 60+ mpg on a very gentle run or low 30's in town.

The best and worse I've had out of a tank are;

Worse 35.01 mpg
Best 48.16 mpg

I do not believe in hanging around.

If you do suspect you are not getting the best mpg, coolant temp sensor and maf sensor failures are common causes, neither usually produce a fault code.

I had a similar problem with my 2003 TDI Sport where fuel consumption rose from an average 44mpg to around 37, the car also ran a bit rough, some days worse than others.
I was getting a temperature sensor fault which I could clear, but could take weeks to come back.
Having changed the MAF and MAP sensors, with no improvement I finally changed the temperature sensor and problem solved.

I have 6 speed sport, drove it steady on A and B roads average 60 mph and got about 50mpg, on motorway at about 70 can't get any higher than 48 mpg. Air con on 19c on auto most of the time, how much difference do you think that would make to mpg?

i use my tdi awx as a cab at the 60 mph mark i get good mileage, but around town it's fairly poor, the temprature sensor has been mentioned in a few posts, can anyone elaborate on this ie cost and fitting wise maybe be worth a shot to change it and see the results.
