1.9 TDI engine noise help

This weekend on steep climbs (2nd gear) there was a 'swirling' noise coming from the front.

The clutch wasnt slipping, engine temp was spot-on, no warning lights, smoking from rear etc etc. It only happened on the steep climbs in the Lakes. When back down nothing/as normal.

Help! What does it mean?:confused:

could the front wheels have been slipping?It could have been the traction control stopping spinning front wheels.

Definitely not the tyres (hot sunny dry day as well)
