How to control iPod on RCD 500?

Hi! I just got my Golf GT with the RCD 500 and an iPod attachment. Basically just a wire with a docking plug in the glove compartment. My question is this: how do I control the iPod via the RCD 500 panel? So far I know that pressing the "CD" button will bring up a display showing Ext CD from 1 to 6 but no track names or playlist names. Meanwhile the controls on the iPod are locked out so I can't use it. How do I get to the playlists via the RCD 500 panel?
