Hi Prolfe,

????

(Lavasoft)

Spybot is also good.

In true belts and braces style I use AdAware 2008 and SpyBot together, along with a few other spyware/AV products and several layers of FW :approve:.

Am I paranoid ? ....

No ...., if I was paranoid I'd run them all inside a virtualised environment aswell, perhaps with a DHCP based clean boot image :o.

Don't you mean PXE boot for imaging from the like of RIS, ghost, Radia etc. Dynamic Host Control Protocol just issues an IP address:D;)

Hi Rob,

My apologies to all in advance, if this post is "too geeky" or uninteresting.

... Dynamic Host Control Protocol just issues an IP address ...

Yes, in reply to a DHCPDISCOVER a DHCP server replies with a DHCPOFFER containing client configuration including;

dynamically allocated leased IP address (YIADDR field)
Subnet mask (OPTIONS field)
Default Gateway (OPTIONS field)
Lease time (OPTIONS field)
Config time (OPTIONS field)
...
However, recall that DHCP is a backwards compatible derived protocol of BOOTP, and that BOOTP was specifically designed for network booting. Thus in addition to dynamically allocating IP addresses, a DHCP Server may be configured to assign network boot images, (FILE field) to be transported by TFTP.

Don't you mean PXE boot for imaging from the like of RIS, ghost, Radia etc.

Over 10 years ago before PXE existed (still had a Golf TDI then :approve:), I was network booting Linux boxes using BOOTP/DHCP and TFTP to download Kernel images.

I really should have mentioned PXE, since these days PXE is more widely used and DHCP/BOOTP is somewhat of an anachronism :o.

Interestingly () however, PXE has its roots in DHCP/BOOTP and TFTP, since it is an extension and combination of these protocols.

Related RFCs:

BOOTP (http://tools.ietf.org/rfc/rfc951.txt)
DHCP (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2131.txt)
TFTP (http://tools.ietf.org/rfc/rfc783.txt)

BTW, I think you must be sufficiently paranoid to be implementing PXE, to have spotted that ;).

Regards,
TR7

P.S.: AFAIK the above details are correct, but admittedly it has been a few years since I have implemented TCP/IP protocols and written device drivers.

Sorry Rob,

Have you tired Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
It's free and surprisingly good. Much better and faster than Ad-Aware for finding malware on your PC.

As a way of protection against spyware and malware i use Firefox and a plug in called NOSCRIPT.

Now I run Spybot every other month and even then it doesn't find owt.
