Creaking noise when steering

hello

my 1994 passat cl 2.0 has done 84,000 and runs sweet as a nut!
however..

recently i notice a strange 'creaky' noise when i steer at low speeds

not sure how best to explain the noise - sounds like something is dry?
checked power steering fluid and its ok!

did not used to do this.

any ideas would be gr8

Possibly a dry track rod end, ball joint or seizing top mount bearing as yours uses the later bearings and these can size although they make the springs clonk. The way to test for this is to raise the car and disconnect the track rod end on the noisy side and that will tell you if it is ball joint or track rod end.
