Hi there,
This is my first post on this forum so hi to everyone :)
I have recently developed a problem on my 1.6s Golf. My rev count would be at 1 in the morning but once the car warmed up it would go down below 1 (as normal) then when driving around it would randomly go back to 1 when come to a standstill and it would stay there for a while then when it pleased it would come back to under 1.
A few days ago my local mechanic had a look at this and said it could be the throttle that needs cleaning, so he cleaned the throttle and sprayed some cleaner on it.
After this it has gone worse, the revs go up to 1.5 while standstill and goes up and down from 1 to 1.5 while in standstill. As you can imagine it is rather annoying.
Anyone have any ideas of how to diagnose this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers in advance. :)

on first read, i would of said the same, the throttle body could be to blame, id try giving it another clean with some carb cleaner. it could also be down the the throttle position sensor or even there is a slight possiblity that it could well be the MAF, does it show any hesitation or variation in rev counts through the entire gear range, or is it simply the idle rev that appears to be affected? if i were you,id have a quick go with vagcom or a code reader, see if any fault codes have been logged as they can often help diagnose a problem issue liek this.

thanks for your response. I have had it cleaned twice now with cleaner. I have noticed since he cleaned it that when im changin gear 3rd to 2nd the revs go up when in neutrel during that change from 3rd to 2nd and when in second it goes back to normal. I have also noticed that when im cruising at a certain speed and i let go of the accelarator the car does jerk at certain times. Note that this has all become more since the clean. Do you reckon it could be worth driving it around to see if it takes a while for the cleaner to get around the system?

Disconect the battery and after a minute connect back on and take the car for a drive including a fast drive on the motorway. Thats needed to initiate basic settings so the car learns to breathe with a "clean throat". If it still doesnt improves, i suggest taking the car to a dealer or vw specialist to do a throttle body adaptation and again to initiate/save the basic settings. Hope this helps. Erattic idling has nothing to do with the MAF. Also look for split hoses around the intake/throtlle body as they lead to similar symptoms. Hope this helps.PS: MAKE SHURE YOU HAVE THE RADIO CODE !!
