Hey people, i'm interested in putting a sat nav into my car, i belive it's the mfd2 for the golf mk5's. i spoke to VW about buying one off them and they told me that the correct wiring loom was not fitted. alot of people selling this item say that it is just a case of unpluging my original radio and swapping it.
can anyone shed any light on this for me.
Thank you
Dan

i'm at swindon at the mo. i've got a good idea on taking the radio out as you've been helping me with my ipod connection removal (Thanks by the way). i'm more worried about the wrong loom in the car?

the wrong loom is unlikely.

I'll eat my pants however if there is more than one type of loom.;)

ok then, i don't want to see that so i'll take you word for it. i'm interested in doing this. could you tell me the best way of going about it. i've read that the dvd version is better then the cd version.

dvd yes.

i got mine off ebay and took my time and waited for the right unit to come along. I only wanted to buy off a uk seller and didn't want to pay over £400. i also wanted the sale to come with the dvd, gps antenna and radio code.

in the end i paid £370 on a best offer.

there are loads for sale on ebay form the likes of Lithuania, i've read of people buying these and have had no issues. but who you buy off is purely your choice.

do a search on ebay for mfd2 http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=mfd2 and these are the current items available. of this list i'd say this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-MFD2-DVD-SAT-NAV-PASSAT-GOLF5-TOURAN-EOSdvd-map-incl_W0QQitemZ130223140954QQihZ003QQcategoryZ15695 4QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) is the best of them.

I also got one of these as well. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DVD-TV-Multimedia-Adapter-for-all-VW-MFD2-and-all-RNS2_W0QQitemZ310131085192QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Au dioTVElectronics_GPSSystems_GPSSystems?hash=item31 0131085192&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318

What exactly does the multimedia thing do, just turn your head unit into a tv, is it just a case of plugging it in?

also, how different is it to TOMTOM, i like the fact that you can get traffic updates with tomtom, does the mfd2 have a function that does that and how much does it cost?

the multimedia gizmo, allows anything to be pluged in to and played through the mfd2. so long as the thing you want to use can be hookes up to the red and white phono connections for audio and yellow for video.

games console, tv, pc, dvd, phone, music player.

In relation to the tom tom.

the tom tom can do full post codes, be carried with you on foot and be easily stolen and also leaves and mark on the glass from its rubber sucker.

the tom tom will also charge you to update your maps and by extra maps for europe, the europe dvd disc that comes with the mfd2 will get you where you need to go.

take for example the following ficticious post code. AB12 3CD

you enter the whole lot in to the tom tom but in the mfd2 you 1st enter AB12 3 then you have to start spelling the road name then enter the number of the building.

I have both systems. the tom tom or in my case navman is by far more user friendly, but my navman is blind in france.

But the main thing for me is, the mfd2 looks far better in the car and i can watch tv while i'm waiting for the boat or train - something the tom tom can't do.

Hi people, not a hijack but a couple of extra questions please.

Looking to buy the MFD2 for the wife's Golf and happy with the fitting process.

How detailed are the current (V4?) DVD maps? seems to be lots of whinges about missing streets and street names?

Is the postcode search still limited to a part code in V4 (e.g. B99 9 )?

You mentioned comparing the MFD2 with a pocket nav - is the MFD2 up to scratch for choice of route and guidance through awkward junctions etc?

Also, what's the definitive truth on TMC with the MFD2?

Thanks in advance....

Link now fixed.

As ebay itens end, links become void.
