This has been created for all towbar and towing related queries and problems. Please post all towbar related information here REGARDLESS of your vehicle.

Many people are duely concerned when fitting a towbar either themselves or from a company, as it can severly damage the aestheics of their car which they have spent a lot of money on in the first place.

Therefore, if you have had a towbar fitted, please can you take the time to post up photographs of the finished atricle, including the

make, model and year of the vehicle
manufacturer of the towbar
the company who fitted (if applicable)
if it is a detachable bar please post pictires of the towball attached and removed
I'll start the ball rolling with my own car so you all get an idea of the layout.

Please DO NOT post questions in this thread, they will be removed.

Manufacturer of the towbar - Bosal (part 034-601), fixed swan neck

Bumper cut required? Yes
Visible bumper cut? No, it's in the bottom black part of the bumper and it's on the bit underneath where you can't see it.

I bought the towbar from Towequipe over the telephone rather than the internet because I wanted to make sure it came with the correct bypass relay. Also, the fitting instructions don't say whether a cut is required but I needed one when I fitted the same bar to my 306 so they checked with Bosal for me before I bought the towbar.

The fitter in Leicester did a fantastic job, very professional, very neat, no mess left behind.

Relatively simple install of the actual towbar itself, a bit fiddly negotiating the front two bolts with the exhaust as it will only drop so far due to the cross bracing underneath.

Part way through doing the electrics, and as I haven't been able to find a wiring colours schematic for the convertible, i've taken extra time doing it, removing the rear clusters to ensure I've got the right wire before I snip it. Decided against scotch locks and have soldered each wire.

Fitted a 13 pin socket kit as supplied by PF Jones, and a 7 way bypass relay, and split charge relay for fridge too. Its nice as its all prewired, but would have been nice if they'd have used a single lead with 13 core, rather than twin old style 2x7 core black and grey. The room for the fold down socket is very very limited and it bends the wire considerably when folded back up.

I've installed the 13 pin socket so that when in use it opens sideways on, to minimise the cutting of the bumper. If I'd have installed it vertically, I'd have to cut a lot more bumper to get it to open correctly.

Cheers,

David

Has anybody sourced a tow bar for the new Q3 yet?
I have been told it is different!

Hi Orty, I have just spoken to Westfalia who are the O.E.S to Audi, they have never heard of it being different. We sell them from this link Audi Q3 2011 Onwards Westfalia Detachable tow bar (http://www.pfjones.co.uk/audi-q3-2011-on-detachable-tow-bar.html)

Thanks Adam.

Thanks for that info Adam,
If I buy the Audi electrics kit do I still have to visit my dealer to have the ecu updated?

Hi.. Couple of Questions if thats ok.. I have a 2007 (07) 2.0 TDI S-line A4 B7..
I see alot of mention about Bumper cut.. Whats the cut for and Is it just the under side of the bumper or does the visible part of the bumper need to be cut?
Do I need a 7 way relay kit for the Fridge electrics and is it plug and play or does it require cabling?

Thanks

PFJones

Hi Richard, yes the bumper needs cutting but it's underneath out of view. The 7 way bypass relay is for the lighting side of things (Only needed if fitting universal wiring)
and the split charge relay is for the Fridge and charging of the leisure battery.

There is universal wiring which is the cheapest, needs to be spliced into the vehicles wiring but perfectly safe or you could go for dedicated wiring which is a kit made for the vehicle (like the genuine kit) so it mostly plugs straight in and will enable any settings the vehicle has for example switch off parking sensors or activate trailer stability (Recommended for cars under warranty).

Here is the link to the fitting instructions for the 13 pin dedicated wiring kit http://www.pfjones.co.uk/westfalia_fitting/305208300153.pdf

If you would like a quote for the parts supplied or supplied and fitted at home, give us a call on 0161 886 5796

Thanks Adam

Hi Adam.. I purchased a Tow bar, 13 pin electrics and 7 way Bypass relay from you.. I have a Couple of questions if thats ok?..
1. The Kit does not come with a heavy duty cable to connect for charging the caravan/using the fridge from the battery.. Is there a reason for this or is this extra?
2. Do you have a installation guide for installing the universal Kit - I have connected all the indicators, brakes, reverse etc but I am not clear on the power feeds and switched live as the instructions that came with it aren't clear.
3. I think there is a wiring loom on the left hand side of the car used for the Audi factory fit module.. Can any of those cables be used for the Caravan fridge/Charging?
Hope you can help..

Richard

Hi Richard, they don't come with the live cable I'm afraid, the main reason is that there would be a lot of waste as we'd have to supply a lot of it due to different car/van lengths, therefore pushing the price up, but any garage or towbar fitter would have it in stock if they were fitting it, just the DIY'er is impacted.
You could give us a call with order details and ask to speak to our tech help guy and he could easily answer any other questions. 0161 886 5796

Cheers Adam.

Hello. Just to give a little feedback. I fitted the westfalia detachable towbar and dedicated 7 pin electrics to my 2012 (facelift) a4 b8 avant s-line (purshased from pf jones).
The car is 2.0 tdi 143 bhp, 6 spd manual, only reverse sensor, concert mmi (no nav or picture of the car while parking). The car was not factory prep, so no bigger fan & no red plug in the foam (not plug and play). I am not going to tow fat trailers or caravans... so I am not worried about overheating.

Fitted following the instructions supplied:
Mechanical side is very easy following the instructions. I just did not cut the valence underneat the bumper as big as the instructions.

Electrical was more tricky has it is not factory prep, so just follow the instructions step by step.
My car is 2012 onward (no red fuse holders), so you had to join a cable to the electonic parking brake module. I havent come accross this on any forum "how to".
You have to "join" to the small gauge black wire pin 22 of the EPB (electronic parking brake). It is a +12v after ignition. I soldered and heat-shrinked it instead of using the vampire crimp supplied. I think the procedure is the same for all Q5 <2012.

Then when you reconnect your battery you get the usual esp error.

I coded with vcds. In order to code properly (for newbies), ignition on, handbrake on, engine off, and a battery charger on is best. My car being different and newer it coded slightly different than what is on the web:

[19 - CAN Gateway]->[Installation List]->Tick 69 - Trailer (I have done this one first as it will ad the trailer module to the canbus system.)

[01 - Engine] NOT DONE AS I DONT HAVE THE DOUBLE FAN OR HEAVY DUTY ALTERNATOR
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 4, Bits 0-3 Changed from 0011 to 0100

[01 - Engine]
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 5, Bit 4 Changed from 0 to 1
(via check box "Trailer Installed" in VCDS)

[03 - ABS Brakes][Security Access - 16] (Enter code presented by program)
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 1, Bit 7 Changed from 0 to 1
(via check box "Trailer Hitch Installed" in VCDS)

[09 - Central Elec]
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 18, Bit 5 Changed from 0 to 1
(via check box "Trailer Hitch Installed" in VCDS)

[10 - Park / Steer Assist] NOT DONE AS MY CAR DOES NOT HAVE IT
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 0, Bits 0-3 Changed from 0000 to 0001 [Trailer Hitch Not Installed to Trailer Hitch Installed (Manually Removable) via pull-down list in VCDS]

[5F - Information Elec] NOT DONE AS I ONLY HAVE CONCERT RADIO
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 10, Bit 5 Changed from 0 to 1

[69 - Trailer] I think it is byte 1, you have to pick within 3 choice of location for trailer set up. It must have something to do with the trailer lights. Being in Ireland, I picked "Rest of the World".

Then i bought the towbar holder 8T0 011 213 B for €13 in Audi and now it fit snug beside the spare wheel.
