Sharan - radiator cooling fan stays on & drains battery

Hi,
I've a 1.9 TDi Sharan ca 7 years old. After a short (1 mile) drive - I noticed that the radiator cooling fan was on when I parked and after about an hour it was still on and the battery drained so low that the car will not start. Definately something wrong.

Currently re-charging battery and would appreciate any ideas on what the problem could be, and how I can sort it out. Cannot afford to go to my local VW dealer !

try replacing temp sender which is fitted on front right of engine block under the cover or if car has a/c try thermo switch on a/c hope this helps:D
