Considering a few cars at the moment, just starting a bit of research. Top of my list are:

VW Passat Tdi, 140 or 170ps version, possibly DSG
Audi A4 Avant Tdi, DSG
Volvo V70 2.4D of some variant

Just wanted your thoughts on the quality of the new Passat & A4. A casual glance through the this forum shows a few unhappy guys with problems. Are these isolated cases or is there a general quality / reliability concern.

My current ride (Golf Tdi PD130) hasn't missed a beat in the last 4.5yrs, never had such a reliable car. Would like to think that an 06/07 Passat would be the same.

Any feedback re. quality / reliability of new A4/Passat? I've assumed them to be roughly the same car or am I making a mistake?

Any comments appreciated.

have a look at the other thread i replied to...

Your best setting a price tag first and taking it from there as the cars you listed have a few K between them

However... have a look at these first and report back

Thanks for the links mate.

I'm more interested in people's personal views on the cars having owned them. I'm always a bit sceptical about the impartiality of so called independant reviews.

I'm willing to adjust my budget to suit, i.e. I'd save up a bit longer for the car I really want.

My current thought is an A4 Avant 170ps (or 140ps) Tdi in a fairly high trim level, which I think would set me back £22k as a nearly new.

Bit unsure about the gearbox. Sort of fancied an auto of some description, but I've heard reports of poor control at low speed.
