Heres the deal, im removing a nearly new towbar from my 1998 VW Passat B5 that im selling.

I need a towbar asap for my 1996 A4 Avant and have a clever mate whos good at engineering.

How different woud the 2 B5 cars be?

I know that when you buy a towbar for either A4 or Passat they both fit saloon and estate models.

looking at the part numbers for passat and a4 the basic part numbers of the chassis and rear floor are the same so that would say yes,BUT i can only go on the partial part number (the first part i assume is the model type),the difference may be down to the angle in which the tow bar comes out of the rear panel, witter do have different part numbers for the towbars.the witter bar for the a4 is a ECT type, the one listed for the passat is as well so long as you have the later passat (ECT is the code for fitting as per oe towbars)

The towbars are different.... I do have a westfalia towbar for a b5 passat and i have tried to fit on my a4 and its not the same thing. The audi ones replace the bumper carier and fits/supports the bumper, the passat bumper skin supports itself ...
