fog lights

recently car informed me of bulb failure left rear. changed it but noticed bulb missing in fog light. put a bulb in it but didnt work. took bulb out of drivers side(new worked) tried no joy. no faults on dash only one fog light on drivers side working (all other lights fine). is there only supposed to be 1 on a4 (why holder 4 bulb there)? is there supposed to be 2 fog lights.

The rear left fog light on the A4 is not live.. only the rear right.. (to elimate other road users think you are braking)

The cluster is same for Left hand drive cars and right hand drive cars hence the option for the bulb..

Just investigating a brake light out on my A6 (02) and noticed the fog light out on the boot lid fog lights. Is this similar to the posts for A4 above?

Also, really dumb question, when I had the lamp cluster out for rear lights, I could see the dual filament stop/side at the bottom,and indicator at the top, but err... what's the single filament bulb in the middle for????
