The bug is making a strange hissing noise when im pressing the brake peddle down at the mo and the ESP light is cooming on. Im thinking that it is a servo problem as the noise can be heard in the footwell. I have to sell the bug as its a petrol and and have to buy a diesel due to the mileage that im doing. I have just had some of the little problems sorted by VW and had the timing belt and water pump changed aswell as the alternator, but i have never sold a car with problems and want to get it sorted before it goes. Anyone heard of servo probs (split pipe i think as there is no loss of fluid) or is there a more common pipe that can fair on these. Its a 2.0l petrol. Cheers all

Certainly sounds like a servo failure but it isn’t a common problem.

Hissing noise is coming from the rubber gaiter just above brake pedal and when i push the gaiter towards the engine it stops. wondering if there is a seal that can be replaced instead of having to change the servo. Im wondering how much of a job it will be to change the servo itself?

Is this under the dash?

A leaking servo, you need a new one.

awww rubbish, any ideas if the servo can be taken out without having to strip to many parts. Tried looking for some info on the net and here but couldnt find anything really.

It is tight to get out once released but you have to remove the master cylinder so after re-fitting that means a bleeding process that we call a Basic Bleed is required. This requires a registered version of VAG-COM or similar to put the ABS pump into bleeding mode.

cheers for the info mate, i have vag com so thats not a problem. I think i will tackle this with a mate asap. So im lookiing at getting the car up on ramps, loosen servo from inside and then remove master cylinder and replace and refit in theory? How long to you think it will take approx mate?

A couple of hours for the servo and however long it takes fur the bleeding which can be a nightmare. PM me your email address.
