Oil Pump failure - Passt 1.8T

Hi all, I have a 1.8T. The warning light came on last week screaming to STOP. I did so and had the car recovered to a main dealer. They told me the oil pump has gone, and that the engine will have run dry for a few seconds while I stopped.

They fitted a new oil pump, and the rattling nose I heard is still there, and the warning light is still on. They told me that a full system flush may be required, which takes 11 hours, and even that may not work, and that the engine may be knackered.

Anyone ever had any experience with a failed oil pump and the damage done? Or has anyone had to get a new/reconditioned engine fitted.

How much will a replacement engine set me back? The car is booked in to the local VW specialist next Friday, however I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone can offer up any info.

not really the same but i had a oil pump go on one of my diesel vauxhall vans and the engine was completely ****** and vauxhall replaced the engine FOC under warrantee - 8 thousand miles only !!!

My car has made that noise for a while on start-up However it now sounds like a diesel, the engine management light is now on, and if I rev the car a big message appears saying "stop motor" and oil pressure flashes.

VW says there could be a blockage still somewhere, and it may take a full system which takes 11 hours, and even that may still not work, and that the engine may have suffered damage when it ran dry when the pump failed.

There is a VW specialist near me, I have to phone up tomorrow to book it in.

Worst case is I need a new engine, just wondering how much that is likely to cost me.:(

Hello Chris,ok the oil strainer blocks with sludge (carbon deposits from poor oil and petrol).Firstly remove the rocker cover and check the camshafts hae not been damaged from oil starvation,also check the camshaft chain for damage and the amount of the tension.If the camshaft appears ok and the bearing caps are ok then remove the sump and inspect the oil pump strainer,this will be blocked up.Remove it and clean it,remove all the breather pipes and clean out all the crap(if any)then scrap the carbon from the inside of the rocker cover and fit new gasket to the rocker cover and reseal the sump.Fit the larger oil filter from the diesel engine and replace the oil,remove the fuse for the fuel pump and crank the engine to pressure rise the oil pump.Refit the fuse and start the engine and increase the rpm to 2000rpm for two mins.If the oil warning light has gone out check the oil pressure in 17 measured value block 1 it will read oil2ok,run the engine to normal operating temp and listen for any rattles and check for light blue smoke.If all ok then drain the oil after 500 miles and refill.One final note check the turbo impeller for excessive movement by hand before any repairs taken.11 hours is a bit steep the original workshop action for 1.8 audi adr engine was 8 hours including replacement of the camshaft timing chain and tensioner.USE MOBILE 1 OIL every 10,000miles and avoid short journeys.The engine management light is on because the camshaft tensioner has surpassed its limlt due to oil pressure loss and will clear once the pressure returns.

Wow mate, that's some excellent advice there. I really appreciate it.

I wish the guys at VW were that helpful.

What do you think the worst is that could have happened? Could the engine be a write off? Or is more likely that the cam has been damaged..

Chris kick off with the dealer as they have not fixed the original concern as this is a repeat repair in my eyes.Cant see why some dealers still dont get this 1.8T sludging concern and carry out a proper repair as i have described.I own a 1.8T Vrs as well as being a audi master tech with 19 years vag experiance.There explanation is crap and they should have cleaned out the engine and drained the oil off after 500 miles.If the top end is bobby munked they should contribute to the repair.Chris good luck,i am not on the forum as much these days so if you respond and i dont answer dont worry ill look in later in the week.Best regards A8ps my v button on my key board is stuck(oer use)

I know it doesn't help those affected but it is a good lesson to those who have these motors - DO NOT cheat on the oil you use or the frequency of changing - this is the principle cause of the sludging.

Semi synth to VW standards really is the absolute MINIMUM for these engines.

The wife has had three now and we have experienced no such problems, the only problem we had was blue smoke and that was an over ambitious top up by the wife, the wifes current one (a 2001 sport) is on 130k.

Personally I use Silkolene Pro S full synth have done since I saw the benefits of using it in the Evolution.

The car is with an engine specialist. He says the engine is far from knackered, and says a new set of shelves should fix the issue.

I've no idea what said shelves are, anyone care to enlighten me?

get the oil pick up pipe looked at.
i had the same problem just after i got mine [awt].pipe was caked solid with sludge/*****.got sump pan shining before it was refitted.its a pig to take the sump off mind.
and take the fellas advice regarding quality oil-makes vast difference to the engine.

He said that was the cause of the issue's as there wa sa complete blockage, he's cleaned them all out and fitted some new bearings to some part of the engine, not sure where, add the new oil pump to that and I'm hoping all should be well.

if hes done the job right then it should be fine.
i would get some fully synthetic in it too and use it from now on.

The car was ready over a month ago, I was ready to pick it up on a Monday, however the garage was broken into and my car was taken. The police found the car less than 3 miles away less than 1 hour later, no damage at all.

I got the car back, and it's running superb. I have to take it back for an oil change as was said earlier after 500 miles.

Cost me £340 in total.

I have to sort out the ticking noise in the dashboard, which I believe to be a flap on the heater / air coin system.

Anyone local to Oldham who has a VAG that could reset it for me? I would reimbers them of course.

Great stuff,disconnect the recirc motor for the heater as thats sounds like the fault for the ticking

Is it an easy thing to do? Can I get to it without removing the dash? If not then it's out of my league, and I'll have to pay which will set me back 100's I'd guess.
