My regime would be (erring on the side of caution)

Change oil and filter at 500 miles, then again at 1500.

After that I'd do (and I do) oil and filter every 5k.

as big col says plus keep the speed down below 65mph and revs in the green if rev counter fitted for the first 1500, this does pay in the end

Phone vw direct. Get them to fax or email the exact intervals for a new engine otherwise if it goes pop in a month they will simply put blame on you for not maintaining it correctly.

Hi Yelova
i have had a look in the vw service scheule that came with the vehicle from new (mine's a lt 35 lwb 2.5 tdi 2003) and it states your first service, oil change service every 22,500 km / 15,000 miles or every year which ever comes first this includes filter, then every 22,500km/15,000miles, but i would give the vehicle to the dealer to do the service then if anything happens you have fulfilled your side. I always let the dealer do my servicing while it was in warranty then if anything happened ie, cambelt snapped or the crank pully broke apart then it was down to vw, what you do after the warranty has run out is up to you. to be fair though i have found vw to be ok with this vehicle when its had probs and with the two i had in 1989, if i can help anymore let me know

Hi Parms,
do you know if the smoke is black (prob fuel)) or blue (oil) but with a new build it will take a while for the engine to settle down and use a bit of oil to begin with for a while, can you not take it back to who did rebuild for them to look at ?
