hi,
seem to be having a problem with my 2002 a3, its a 1.6 petrol, when i start the car the temp gauge starts on 90 even though the engine is cold. i was told it could be the temp sensor, however since fitting a new temp sensor, i still have the same problem. could it be the thermostat??

Hi It is not your thermostat,What happens when you remove the contact on the temp sensor, although removing it will logg a fault code on the ECU,you can do it to see what happens.l

Err, are you sure you have a problem?

My A3 does the same, as did my previous two Golfs.

Well I would say u have a problem because my A3 doesnt start on 90, if the engine is cold it should start from the bottom of the gauge.

i tried uncliping the sensor, but nothing seems to happen. is there another sensor on/near the radiator on the passenger side? as it looks like the clip that goes onto it has been damaged, it doesnt come off..could this be the problem??

i have the same problem with my car a 2002 a3 1.9tdi, mine starts at 80 and when warm its on 110 which is slightly worrying, had mine plugged in at audi and they told me its the instrument cluster [part no:8lo 920 950dx] at a cost of £300 notes. so at the moment i am trying to source one cheaper, if anyone can help me it would be much appreciated so i guess yours may have the same problem.

yes, it is a cluster problem. sending mine off to be repaired, to a company called bba-reman. £150 + vat. there is information about it on their website

iv got a similar. I am thinking of sending it to BBA but it has to removed first. Did you remove the cluster yourself? and how long did take to get it fixed?

thanks

no mate took mine to audi and they done it all in half hour for 300 quid, i couldnt be without the car for 5 days or so. works perfect now bang on 90. to take it out jus pull the plastic trim jus below the clocks towards you, and there r two screws undo them and its out .

it appears the issue was the water pump as i took the car back yesterday and they fitted a new water pump and i took it for a nice drive yesterday ands the overheating problem seems fixed.;)
