Hi,
If you use your finger and push down on the part that is curved downward the door should open.

At junkyards often the door handle has been removed and you can open the doors with just the touch of a finger.;)

This is a well known flaw in the VW door lock mechanism design that lets thieves open any of the four doors with a hammer and a large flat-bladed screwdriver. There are even Armored Door Plates sets sold to prevent it from happening.

That is what happened to my Passatt last christmas in Utrecht, the Netherlands while at my brother-in-law's home. I though it was a heck of a present after a pleasant family christmas dinner. It really changed my mood.

Here is an image of an exploded diagram. Use a pair of needlenose or duckbill pliers to pull the bellcrank #17 and it should release the lock unless it is really badly corroded. Once the lock is released door should open easily.

Cheers,
Eric
