Bushes!!what Are They?

Can someone please tell me what are rear axcel bushes and what do they do?
What happens if they fail?
I have been told that my unusual knoking sound coming from the rear is due to rear bushes being worn.
Please can someone put some light on this as I havn't a clue what to do,thanx jeff

look inside the wheel arch at the rear and see the big bolt on the beam ??
this is a axel bush and very common to change but can be expensive if you go to main ******* go small independnt garage

They can be removed by using an air chisel but it takes time and can damage the axle, we use a special tool to extract and then fit the new bush.
