Question

My problem - My gearbox is leaking or revving or jerking.

In my case I'm told I need to change seal - on auto gearbox

So I had gbox refilled at £80 cost from Audi (they wouldnt tell me grade of oil to use)

i wouldn't top up with the wrong oil. Also its very awkward unless a mechanic so let them do it.

Its £350 to change the seal (seal costs £10) due to having to drop box - labour charges

So I filled with oil for 80 and now its empty again 3 months later - temporary fix.

Car jerks - when changing gear and also goes into neutral due to low oil pressure and momentum of moving car!

ANSWER

All you need to do is top oil up - oil pressure restored

Change filter - removes gunk

and change seals in case of any leaks!

Auto boxes on a car should be flush refilled every 5 years at least with filter change - any car.

For people with 1 second delays on a tiptronic Audi box setting off - guys it is not a fault its the way the gearbox is made. Such is life!

HEY PRESTO DONE!

FOR PEOPLE WHO GET THE HIGH REVS THEN FAST ACTION AND CAR JERKS ITS OIL PRESSURE - OIL IS LOW SO THE CAR EITHER ROLLS BACK ON HILLS OR DOESNT REVERSE PROPERLY AND AT JUNCTIONS GOES AUTOMATTICALLY INTO NEUTRAL AGAIN DUE TO DROP IN PRESSURE IN BOX > ALSO WHEN TURNING CORNERS OIL SWINGS TO ONE SIDE SO CAR REVS OUT OF GEAR

JUST TOP OIL UP CHECK FOR LEAKS - MY CRANK SEAL WAS LEAKING! - not a new box for 2000 as Audi lazy gets advised. The dealers arnt born to actually fix anything. Nor are they trained to repair. All they know is how to sell parts new and put them in a car. Again - such is life!

YOULL BE FINE

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that - I'm having trouble with the slipping - high revs, rolling back on hills and jerkiness.

One thing: how do you top up the oil?

Go to Audi its hard to top oil up and grade is important as if you put wrong one in its dead box - just get them to do it its 8 pound a litre all inc so you end up paying 80 pounds or so and get a dealer receipt which is good for resale as it shows a proper gearbox service- thats what i did just a refill no dropping of box. Their computer measures everything.

however if your box is low on oil it could be leaking - it could be a seal leaking or coolling pipe seals to radiator - cost about 300 altogether for new pipes n seals an labour - go to a gearbox specialist - theres one in Preston lancashire hes a genius he found my fault in 20 mins - that even the useless techs at audi couldn't find after 3 hours - they just say buy a new box they arnt trained to fix things only sell parts and if your car is older than 3 years they'll laugh at you as well for trying to fix the car and for not buying another new car from all the shiny ones there - so go to a gearbox specialist and they can do the whole thing cogs an all aswell piece by piece like a proper scientist or engineer.

If its just time you want to buy get it topped up by audi and you get three more months out of it. For clarity. The service jobs they do at audi are quality. I had my v6 tdi 2.5l a4 done there as well and the cam-belt service was 1200 pounds with a service included but it was best job ever done by a dealer in 5 hours whole kit an water pump everything. Painful but 5* job. No one else could match that job. Its a guaranteed feel difference job and proper mint effort done properly. Not easy on V6. No dodgy parts.

wonder If u can help. I've Got audi a6 sline 58 plate. It's the 2.0 automatic. Having some issues at mo, when slowing the revs are increasing and feels like car running away, also got a grinding and chugging noise when driving slow, and car feels like it loses power occasionally when trying to reverse and also when accelerating normally fr stationary it feels that it's lagging and then as if something catches up and kicks in giving normal acceleration. Also when doing abou 70, u can feel vibration under left foot where clutch pedal would be on manual. Any ideas?

Start with coil pack - glow plug/sparks etc. loss of power sometimes emanates there. Also I can't give you guarantees but if you've recently gearbox serviced it - mine was done by dealer depending on whether system was hot or cold the amount of fluid may have been overfilled. At high temp its too much pressure hence vibrations. This can also happen if too low i.e no recent service. Cheapest way instead of a new box is to have a full gearbox flush and filter change. If filter is clogged no point wasting on new fluid. Do both. Cheaper than new box. Also while open replace all the little smaller filters/seals go dry an leak sometimes and gearbox electric sensors which are a few quid if need be. The dealer couldn't fix mine but a specialist in Preston - auto gearbox limited something like that did mine for 350 all inc labour plus changed my cooling fluid pipe which had a small leak at same time. Grinding is worrying as that's normally clogged filter or low oil. Do now before knacker box. Shop around an don't believe everything the workshops tell you. Mostly they're guessing. Eventually you'll find a small guy and who knows by actually looking what's wrong. Google the Preston auto gearbox specialist. They do all cars. They're experts and somewhere near city centre. Last time dealer flushed mine fluid inc labour was 80 quid. Filter an that is bit more. They don't like doing filter even if you ask them as its actual work so make sure if you ask to do it they do it and don't fob you off with - it doesn't need doing. Best of luck. PS. Wow. A further reply after 5 years nearly. Oh and one thing the chugging or slipping sometimes is lack of gearbox oil pressure due to low fluid or bad filter. Its not consistent pressure hence the chugging slipping in out of gear etc. dirty oil is bad in a gearbox. Burn deposits etc.

Hi thanks for that, I bought the car just a month ago from second hand garage, I asked them to check it and they plugged it in and said no faults coming up. I told them that it's mechanical and not electrical, car meant to be going in again next week for them to have another look, what should I ask them to do? Any specific way they can check for fault, thanks in advance

This is my last reply unfortunately pal. If you got a good deal then is fix it. If your budget is tight and you topped paid market value then I'd return for refund and walk away. Trades descriptions laws protect you and if you get in touch with trading standards and sometimes better than them is to contact the councils legal department without harassing them by a call and a letter then ul find they'll pull stops out to help you. Usually it means taking the car back. Leaving it there and saying refund please. A gearbox problem like the one you're suggesting is a major issue not minor and a trader or business especially cannot sell a vehicle like that unless the fault was advised at the time. A private seller on other hand means you unfortunately have to fall on a sword as its buyer beware. A commercial or business trader can't do that and as a lawyer by profession trust me- if they refuse you not only will they owe you money and lose in court but the council once you tell them and trading standards will prosecute them for selling unworthy goods. A private seller if they deliberately sell you misrepresented goods also are liable in contract law if its proved fault is obvious and fault hidden deliberately they're liable. A business seller is criminally liable as you can't sell goods in that way. Many smaller one man forecourts do as its a nice way to con people by brushing up a wreck and selling as normal. A fault like you're saying would have been apparent when they bought it and test drove it and they didn't mention to you at sale. I would approach them nicely and say its a major mechanical issue. Car is recent purchase and you'd like your money back simple as. If they refuse then notify the council and TS dept and drop car off to seller and send letter that you have done asking for money back and take few pics and council will back you all the way. They'll end up summoned to court on criminal regulatory offence if they don't refund you just for selling a car in that condition without stating the obvious fault. Not only will they have to pay you compensation but court costs to the council of about 2000 for ending up in court plus a criminal fine up to 5000. Cost to you is nil. Just time. Its common. Ive seen many of these prosecutions. Sounds scary but easy process and council will take care of you. Just start with a friendly assertive approach and don't go gung ho. It costs you nothing if council take on your case as they initiate the prosecution and pay all court fees costs etc. there's no place for rogue traders and a good council will jump at chance. If you got a brilliant deal and want to keep it then fix it and it sell on but you may have to advise next seller. Sometimes its worth fixing it. So....There's 500 pounds worth of advise free from a lawyer and a car enthusiast as goodwill and I hope others reading this can benefit from this post too. Sadly I won't be replying to any further posts. Good luck to all. I don't accept any liability for goodwill citizens advise. Any actions you take or not are your own choices in life.

Also - Start with coil pack - glow plug/sparks etc. sparks is cheapest and easy. if one is out you won't get proper engine compressions etc resulting in loss of power. Its not always gearbox. Could be turbo or cam-belt etc all sorts of things I'm not an expert on. This thread is for a gearbox and if you narrow it eventually to gearbox them follow the topics advise.

Hi im wondering if anybody can help me??
I recently left my audi A6 automatic tiptronic in the airport as we went on holiday, when we returned and drove away it clunked into gear then all the PRND lights were all lit up and it now does this every cold morning until it warms up and its turned off then restarted.
Also since then when i accelerate now it doesnt seem to have the power as it used to especially on kick down.

Any kind of advice would be very grateful.

You could try an ATF change.Although tiptronic boxes are not supposed to need it mine has had it done at 115k miles and its better for it

Let us remember, tiptronic = auto quattro, multi-tronic (cvt) =auto front drive.
Most if not all posts on this fluid change and selection issue and particularly the flashing PRND symbol is telling of impending doom on the multi/cvt front drive auto

If you force the car when its trying to tell you not to then you will do more damage. The car gear light flashes because its warning you then in spite of that if you use it ul make it worse. As previous do the filter and oil ASAP that means yes filter as well. They're lazy and will try to persuade u to only do oil but you must do both. Alternatively and cheaper is to get a electronic guy to come and clear all your codes! It happened on my tiptronic once. Guy cleared codes and 10 pound later no issues. Why spend 500 when u can spend 10. Also do the little tiny filters on the gearbox as well. You may have sludge. Lots of particles in ATF oil is a no no. Hurry. Sooner you do it less damage ul have. Go to a specialist NOT a dealer. Auto gearbox specialist. Dealers arnt qualified to fix anything they only learn how to replace stuff. The dealer will say buy a new box and his boss will say buy a new car and his boss will say buy the company. That's how they think.
