Hi Rick, mcavw

8.04 is the H (Hardy Heron ) Long Term Support (LTS) Full Release, so is promoted from Beta status to RTM/RTW, and is available for download now, see;

Get Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download)

Desktop is now running 8.04 / Vista dual boot
Server is now on 8.04 too.

I tried the 8.04 and Vista dual boot for 6 motnhs, but was appauled at how bad Vista was, particularly when running heavyweight databases. It seemed while everything (even the most demanding/heavyweight applications/services) ran very well with XP, Vista just wouldn't move :(..

Vista really doesn't have any groundbreaking features or stability that make it worthwhile to install. On the contrary I have reverted to a XP SP2/Ubuntu dual boot and the speed/stability difference is distinct :Blush:.

I suspect that Vista may have a faulty MAF or N75 valve :p.

I've been using Linux for some 13 years (Red Hat floppy installs, writing device drivers ... :Blush2:), and I've seen Linux mature. It's great to see the Ubuntu distribution, and personally it's now made me alot less reliant on $MS OSs.

mcavw, have you had any issues upgrading to Ubuntu 8.04, and what have your experiences been ?

I've been one of the few that have had, touch wood, no serious issues with Vista (32bit Home Premium SP1) from the offset. It does everything I want it to do, yes bits of it bug the poop out of me, but I get on with it just fine.

I had a triple boot initially, Vista, XP and Ubuntu but I wasn't using XP much, if it all and it was just another boot option for the kids to hit by mistake. I still use XP on my laptop and I have my whole office running XP too.

No where near 13 years of Linux here, I'd say I'm on year 4 (on and off). I've got a nice collection of live CDs and all sorts of flavours, but I just keep coming back to Ubuntu and variations thereof purely for the ease of use for everyone. I'm running a Smoothwall (www.smoothwall.org) box at work and home, and a few FreeNAS (www.freenas.org) servers for a bit of extra storage. My next job is to convert the Ubuntu server mentioned above into a LAMP/media box for home.

As for upgrading, I didn't! I did a clean install I'm afraid. I tend to find things like to go wrong with the updates so I backed everything up (minimal data on the dual boot as most of the data was stored on a shared internal HDD and nothing at all on the server as it's all on an NSLU2) and just blitzed the drive.

I'm ashamed at the geekiness of the above post, so I apologise if you made it this far http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/smilies/nerd_smiley.gif

Hi Sam,

I didn't find your reply geeky at all. I found it all quite relevant and dare I say interesting.

I'm glad to hear that your having more joy with Vista than I did, perhaps it was just Vista couldn't cope with the demand I had put on to it, on an otherwise previously adequate computer!

Someone, really should re-teach M$ what Vorsprung durch technik means.
Nevertheless, hopefully, the imminent XP SP3 RTM will redeem M$ (ever so slightly) for me.

Thanks for the Smoothwall and FreeNAS links, I'll check these out.

Regards,
TR7

Unashamed thread revival :o,

A year on from 8.04, six months on from 8.10, and Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope (9 => 2009, 04=> April) is available for download NOW (I have just completed downloading as I type).

Download Ubuntu 9.04 (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download)

Main updates;

Faster boot times reported
Support for Ext4 filesystem (treat cautiously, ext4 issues have been noted)
Open Office 3.0
Gnome 2.26
Kernel 2.6.28

Remember, that if you already have Ubuntu installed, you can just upgrade to 9.04 without having to reinstall (not sure on the ext4 upgrade route).

see; Uprading to Ubuntu 9.04 (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading)

If you haven't tried Ubuntu before, it's easy enough to do without having to install or other commitments (perfect for men heh :confused:), by downloading and burning the .iso image from the first link mentioned, then performing a live boot from the CD.

This provides an oppurtunity to try/test most functionality without installing.

Windows 7 isn't the only recently anticipated OS release.

Ubuntu 9.10 is now available for download in 32 bit and 64 bit flavours from;

Download Ubuntu 9.10 (http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download)

A point worth considering when choosing a download site, is that the GB site seems to be more heavily loaded and slower than some of the other sites.

Q: What is Ubuntu ? (http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu)
A: Humanity to others ...

Ubuntu 9.0.4 users with the most recent updates installed, can opt for a direct upgrdade to 9.10; Upgrading to Ububtu 9.10 (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading)

Ubuntu 10.4 (http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/1004features) (Lucid Lynx, kernel 2.6.32) has been available for download (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download)/upgrade (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading) since late Thursday.

On Thursday evening there seemed to be upgrade issues from the UK site, however other sites seemed to fare better.

I've been having an issue for a few days now trying to run apt-get update/upgrade.

It keeps timing out/freezing on the "translations-EN" section of the update.

In more geeky news, I've hacked an o2 Joggler (http://yourfamily.o2.co.uk/o2familyjoggler/) and it's now running UNE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_netbook) which is a thousand times more useful than the original software.
