A fluid leak at the banjo connecting the rear hydraulic fluid pipe to the calipers is caused by the two aluminium washers on either side of the union corroding. VW maintain it is due to the effect of salt on roads during the winter, but the widely held belief is that it is due to the electrolytic action between dissimilar metals. The banjo is made of steel, the calipers of cast iron and the washers of aluminium.

This matter was pursued through the official UK Government VOSA which deals with recalls. Although VW acknowledge the fault not sufficient vehicles have been effected to warrant the effected vehicle being recalled. The washers which come complete have to completely replaced The modified parts are 1J0 611 763K and 1JO 611 764 K. Although there is consultation VOSA have no legal power to insist that manufacturers issue vehicle recalls.

I have all this documented.

It is a serious problem and despite the cross linking of the hydraulic system which is common across all motor vehicles, it still means your foot goes down to to floor if you have the fault. The action could also result in damage to the master cylinder which are quite an expensive items to replace.

In the interests of safety I believe that any such vehicle with the original pipes still fitted should be replaced before a problem develops and in any case if an owner is not prepared to do this it is worth checking the rear
VW (UK) refuse to make any contribution and although VW main dealers are aware of the problem it is irresponsible of them that they have not even alerted owners to the problem, let alone recalled vehicles for examination.
NN:Posted this information on the TDI site and one reply indicated that copper washers are used as original equipemnt in the US and it was suggested that copper washers could be substituted. Cannot vouch for this information

Presumably no explanation is given to owners who have repairs carried out by VW main dealers.
