Hi chaps, I am a new member so has taken me about 20 minutes just to get to this point! Hopefully you will all beable to view this post.

I have a on-going problem with my s3 which is driving me round the bend.

I had the re-map done about 3 yrys ago from Fontain motors in Buckinghamshire, from where I bought the car.

The car has done 66k miles and has been fully serviced by either audi/fontain (independant specialists). For some reason my car seems to be shuddering under heavy accelerationaround. This starts at about 2700-3000 revs, and shudders all the way till red-line. infact i cant even take it till red-line as it feels as though the car is going to die on me..! So from approx 3000 revs upwards I get power followed by lag, followed by a quick busrt of power, then again by a lag, all the way up.

I took it in to the shop and the guys said it was the air-mass meter, he took it out and said to give it a try which i did, and low and behold all problems solved for a while. Unfortunatelyi drove around in it for approx 2 months with the meter out and the problem came back. Since then I have had the air mass replaced, along with a new thermostat and water pump as the car was overheating. the overheating has been solved but ithe shuddering continues.

I would appreciate anyones assistance on this as it is ruining my driving pleasure considerably, and am even thinking about selling my beloved s3 due to this problem. My mechanic says the next step could be to change the spark plugs , but I dont want to throw good money after bad if its not going to solve the problem. The car has been on the diagnostic machines and come out clean, so not sure what to do..........help pls.............

Many thanks

Hello VK,
Sorry to hear you are having issues.

I am no expert here at all, so you would be best speaking to 'Crasher' or someone of his standing...however....
The symptoms you describe could point to a coil pack(s) or faulty plug(s), exacerbated by the extra demand on the plugs caused by the remap....new set of plugs shouldnt cost much?

Like I say, an expert on here will more than likely be able to help....
Don't give up on the beloved S3 just yet!

Best of luck!

Jim

Click on the link. This should take you to Crashers member details. Half-way down the page there are 3 hyperlinks on the right hand side. The bottom one should allow you to send him a Personal Message.

Sounds like the spark-plugs or the coils, the plugs are relatively inexpensive and you can buy decent ones from Halfords now. Would be worth sticking a new set in to be safe.

If you aren’t doing already, run her on Super-Unleaded such as V-power, this will over time clean up the injectors as this could also be a problem, your car has done a few miles now, would also be worth using some petrol additive/cleaner.

As I’m sure you will have found out by now the coil-packs are susceptible to going, but these aren’t the end of the world and can be easily obtained and fitted so don’t loose faith with her yet.

I wonder also if it might be the dump-valve, this might explain the on-off power and it happening when it does in the rev-range. If you’ve had the car re-mapped you should have upgraded the DV, so again stick one in to be safe, these are relatively inexpensive. Make sure you get a recirculating type and not an atmospheric type (the chavvy whooshy ones) as these are detrimental to the engine.

So spark-plugs, petrol additive and a DV, shouldn’t cost more than £50 and one or all of them should hopefully sort your problem out. If not then it’s the coil-packs, these are a few quid but not too much so leave these till last.
