I have had my brand new Le Mans saloon a few days down and am getting 41-42mpg on a motorway run at 70 using the cruise control. Will this improve when the engine gets a few more miles on it / what can I expect / what are other people getting?

Getting 38-44 in my avant, dependant on my driving. 38 is hard driving. 44 very light footed <65 and no cruise. Getting same as you in jump-in-car-and-drive-without-thinking-about-it type driving.

Thanks for that, did you notice any difference after the engine got a few thousand miles on it? Assuming you had your car from new that is.

Yep had car from new three months ago. But only got 5K on so maybe more improvement to go. I maybe should have mentioned it's multitronic, no quattro and I use BP Ultimate Diesel. Personally I will be happy if it stays 40-ish.

My car is also a none quatro multitronic, got it up to 43.3 just now on the M6. Hoping for high 40's.

hi
had mine for 4 weeks , bought at a yea rold , 2.7 tdi s line quattro , DSG
getting average 33 - 35 mpg mixed driving , i thought this was quite good after the 12 mpg my 4.6is X% used to yield !!!!!:aargh4:
Have any of you guys had yours remapped ? im planning on getting mine done once im used to the driving style , not sure where though .
happy with the car , its such a lovely cruiser , much more comfortable than my bully boy X5 !

Have now done 7000 miles in mine and cannot get the overall average better than 36 which I think is lower than Audi publish

Now had it 6 months and 9000 miles, the averaged average on the trip is 38, regularly do 250 mile trips and get 42, have had 47 on one careful driving occasion. If I hammer it I get 36 so I would say you are either are a very enthusiastic driver, your type pressures are wrong or there is something up with the car.

To answer a query up above mine is not remapped or tweaked in any way.

one thing i forgot to mention is that mine is a quattro , do you guys think the 4wd will make such a difference to the mpg ??????

Many thanks. I am quite a careful driver so certainly not hammering it. I will get this checked by Audi when I book it in. I check tyre pressure once per month, ususally OK, but will check more often.

More Info: just been to Europe and back with 4 people inc myself and luggage. 1300 mile round trip. 41.8 on way there and 42.3 on way back without really trying. Mine is NOT Quattro, and I have tyre pressures 44 all round as per petrol cap sticker for full load. So I would say 36 is low if you are alone in car.

Many thanks for the update. Have just checked again since I last reset the computers and I am averaging 36.6 MPG. Now done 7.5K miles and never had better than 36.6 . Short journeys to/from work each day (30 mile round trip) with good roads and few hold ups. Weekend journeys usually 100 - 200 mile trips on main roads and motorways.
I will certainly ask for this to be checked when car goes in for some minor warranty work in a couple of weeks.

hi, I find a similar fuel consumption in my 2007 2.7 multi - average 36 if i'm rushing or can get upto 44 with a smooth trip. This is according to the onboard computer.

I think the multitronic gear box is great, although presume the engine will take longer to fully wear in; as the average rpm is kept much lower.

I didn't mention that I never use cheap diesel from supermarkets. Alternating 1 tank BP ultimate, 1 BP tank normal. Does this make a difference, I have no idea ?

I do not know either. I have seen recent reports from the motoring press that suggest that the so called ultimate or super fuels make no difference at all and are a waste of money. Did Audi recommend the ultimate fuel for this engine ? Must admit that I thought that standard deisel was correct for the engine.

I had no info from Audi. I read (I think) honest john in Saturday Telegraph claiming an improvement. Tried it, liked the mpg and performance I was getting, and stuck with it. Not very scientific I know, and possibly costing me a fortune, but BP garage is 200 yds from work, Ultimate diesel pump usually empty so there is also a convenience factor kicking in too.

I've got a 2006 2.0TDi 140 Avant 2wd with a 7 speed multitronic box and I struggle to get it to average even 40mpg with gentle driving on fast roads. I spoke to my Audi dealer who told me due to the cold weather I can't expect to get anything better than low 30's. I know it's not the same engine but might help expain.

Low 30's is pretty poor to be honest. My 3.0 will do more than that!

Whats your average over a full tank?

Don't rely on the trip computer as they can be very dodgy sometimes!

Thing is I calculate it both from Trip and on a spreadsheet where I log everything (fill up, cost, how much until empty, how much did it really give me )
And the audi compared to my calculations in Excel are spot on give or take .1

I had my second fill up last week, still getting around 23mpg local driving

My overall mpg is 36.1 It has not changed for about 9 months now. I wonder if the computer is stuck. Everytime I look it is 36.1. Not the 39 that Audi claim or the 44mpg in various reviews I have seen.
Before anyone replies with comments about, it depends how you drive it, I have driven cars for over 40 years and have always got at least what the manufacturer claimed for overall combined mpg. My current car simply does not perform to quoted standards but Audi say that there is nothing wrong with the car !!

The DIS calculations can often be wrong. Work it out the more accurate, old fashioned way as a comparison.

My last tank was 35mpg and the one before that 33, which tied into the computer reasonably well. The car has 60hrs on the 2nd fuel computer when I got it and the avergae was 34mpg. By sticking to no more than 60mph I can get the trip to about 40, but only when the car warms up (after about 15mins/10miles).

I run a 2006 2.7tdi multi SE 2w drive, over 43,000 the average as calculated by adding up all the fuel that went and the odo miles, I got 38mpg - trip says 40.8 and on a good motorway run I can get over 40. Most of my miles are motorway or A road, not much urban/suburban.

Not as good as the 2.5tdi I had before though.......:(

Just checked my A6 2.7tdi Avant multi (2007) over two filled tanks and it's returning 25.7 mpg running round town and a bit of motorway :( is this the norm ? the dash read out rarely goes over 33 when you drive it very light footed. my old A6 1.9 tdi did 42+mpg !!!!

In my experience - NO! - that is not so good, but slow urban running does hit my saloon as well, but not that badly

Mate, remember you drive a 1.7 tonne machine and there is a big v6 up front and loadsa toys wich all seep power. Show me another v6 wich does more than 40mpg motorway... Me old tweaked a4 v6 tdi quattro would average 27 mpg mixed but was thrashed every day and would have kept up with m3 and the like! Just dont expect it to be economical just because its a diesel engine...

Thanks for that information ADAMSS24, but i was just trying to reference my MPG against other 2.7tdi multi s line.
Must tell the wife to thrash it on the school run and if she sees an M3 well never know what might happen she may even use the S position on the gear stick thingy....

There definitely seems to be conflicting figures here for these 2.7 non-quattros. Last week I went 250 miles each way to work with 2 passengers and our luggage, plus equipment we use. Trip there 42.7, trip back 40.8. Return trip was tanking it, aircon on, satnav on, stereo on, lights on. I am really happy with these numbers, but some of the low 30s figures here would really upset me with price premium on diesel taken into account. Friend with a 3.2 Petrol A6 gets about 31mpg.

Mine is not chipped, tuned or anything other than me getting it serviced at 12.5K rather than extended interval. Done 20k miles now.

I did a 100 mile motorway trip on saturday, and driving at 70 with the C/control on i got 37mpg, the figures Audi give are all in the mid or high 30s and combined 40mpg.. it has 42k on the clock with FASH, i will give the Audi customer services a call...

I have a 2005 A6 Avant 2.7 TDI 6-speed manual which has returned 38 mpg over the last 11,000 miles (worked out by calculator, not trip computer). The best tank was 49 mpg (regular Shell) on a loooong motorway trip, and the worst was 32.5 mpg on Shell V-Power.

I would be disappointed if the long-term average dropped below 35 mpg.
