I have had a slight oil leak for some time and after desecrating the driveways of everyone I know I have decided to try and fix it. So far I have checked the rocker cover gasket which appears to be fine and the original VW rubber type so I need to look elsewhere. As you look under the bonnet the leak is on the right hand side at the base of the rocker box and above the sump. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Rocker cover gaskets do leak, even the rubber ones, but the head gaskets can leak on these too.

Thanks, I'll replace the rocker gasket, I couldn't see any splits on it but I guess it would be an easy start point before I look elsewhere.

When you get a rocker cover gasket make sure it's one with a new set of bolts. I got a generic one without bolts and the reinforced hoops wouldn't fit all the way down to the head. Already torn the other one off so I had to drive home with the rocker cover vomiting oil onto the exhaust manifold. The other road users were NOT impressed with me. Still, the metal reinforcement bits come out easy enough.
