hi all

here is a post i put on another forum that didn't prompt much response so am trying my luck on here ...

this happened back in february on a rare sunny day...

"right - put the roof down the other day for the first time this year after lunch for a top down drive back to the office - not a problem.
got back to work and the roof would not go back up its a power roof and i held the switch and still nothing - sometimes it takes a while to start the mechanism so used to a bit of a wait. still nothing. had to put roof up manually. also not a problem but it does raise questions....

leading on to the title of this post i now cannot open the boot. the remote locking/unlocking makes no difference and the boot also wont unlock when i use the key - but it does still operate the central locking. the boot operation was fine before i had the roof down on thursday.

has anybody had a similar problem and successfully solved it. i knoe the roof and boot operation are linked in that you cannot open the boot while the roof mechanism is in operation (unless the engine is running!!).

i kind of think its an electrical thing as i cannot use the roof mechanism now either OR the all window switch by the handbrake.

if i have blown a fuse will i find in the usual place under the windscreen or is there fuses placed anywhere else unique to the cabbie.

or do need to take the IT expert approach to everything and "recycle the power" by disconnecting the battery for a while.

any help greatly appreciated

cheers
Dave"

i got a response saying the cables on the boor hinges needed replacing as they will have split - sure enough that was the case - BOTH sides.

So...

"after about 2 weeks of the roof not working the boot unlocked itself and had worked as it should ever since - how ever the roof has reamined faulty- and when i turn the ignition key the roof warning light on the dash would flash 4 times - i spoke to the local audi specialist i have used and just from over the phone he said "it is the left hand hinge loom the wires are broken"

as the weather has been poor fixing the roof has not been a top prority but i had a free weekend so i thought right i am going to fix this and i finally plucked up the nerve to attack the boot loom repair.

sure enough the wires had broken on BOTH sides as it turned out so i effected a repair using some wiring harness i got from an 80 in the local breakers for a tenner. not going to go into the detaisl here and now but can of anyone wants i took a load of pics too

anyway both sides are now repaired and buzzed thorugh just to check continuity and all is good - except the roof still does not work. when i turn on the ignition the roof light in the dashboard now flashes 10 times.

does the number of flashes relate to a specific problem and is there list of these somewhere to help isolate the problem.

when i release the t-handle (the windows all go down as they should) and then pull up the power roof button i can hear a click from the boot - is that the relay on the roof pump. i know my repair has made some diffrence coz i did not hear that click before.

where is the next place to look for faults - i am concerned that the catches that hold the tonneau down need a bood clean - is it possible to put the roof down wihen the power hood mech does not work?

one other thing is that water is getting in the boot lid around the lights - could this be damaging the electrics around the lock?

that'll do for now - hope its clear and hope some one can help

thanks "

and a bit of detail abotu my loom repair...

"the wires i took from the 80 were from the harness that goes from the boot to the front of the car - i did not take the looms from the hinges as they had already been repaired!!!

when i made the new harness up i stripped the wires from the old harness and replaced all wires basically one at a time to make sure i did not have any left over

for information i can confirm that each side of the boot loom has 7 conductors

i need to look elsewhere now to fix the problem "

now i cannot open the boot again and feel i need to recheck the continuity of the repaired loom again)

most import thing is to get the boot open - has anyone had this problem and fixed it simply - i dont want to go smashing the rear light cluster to get acces to the boot lock mech so i can open it.

sorry for the long post but want to share as much info as poss

hope someone can help

cheers

Have not picked up replies to my own roof issues on a 1995 power hood cabriolet, much of your issue is similar to my own. You seem more clued up than me which may mean i'm no greater help to you.

But....my power hood stopped completed its opening. it went halfway, released the lid by two inches but would not complete. like that for 6 months. once only did it go all the way back. now it will not even commence, although t handle drops all windows. boot does not lock on the infra red central locking, but can be locked manually. if you dont the alarm sounds on opening boot. i too get the 4 flashes on exclaimation mark sign on panel.

Audi Crawley did a diagnostics check for £55 and basically said the looms were broken both sides too. £127 each net cost and 3 hours labour and no guarantee that will cure the roof!!!

£500-600 on a value of £3500 plus vehicle makes it a personal nightmare.

I guess you at least know its not only you going mad.

My handbook says releases in door return panels will allow manual operation which I can live with, only i dont have the releases just plastic grommets where they should be!

I'm wondering if draining power hood hydraulics will allow manual operation without resistance or damage.

If you've any advice I'd be grateful.

Sonny

seems we are all aflicted with this design flaw built in by audi many years ago.

my roof is now working and i can get in the boot = but that was more by luck than my own doing but i have a plan to fix that too.

i reapired both my looms for less than the diagnostic check the audi *********** charged you and if you do get the new audi looms fitted the same flaw will remain - albiet prob long after you and the car have parted company. but that is not the point. you really dont want to shell out all that hard earned to end up with what you already have!!!!

the loom repair was actually quite simple and i took a load of pics along the way for future ref - if you are useful with your hands you can prob do it yourself.

am happy to chat on the phone if you need more help = PM me and we'll swap numbers if you want - more than happy to help. even better( & cheaper !!) if you have skype.

FYI the button on the door recess the manual refers to is to release the tonneau cover on the manual hood version- that is why there is a bung on your car.

BTW i was so focussed on the problems at the back end of the car that i failed to even consider the fuses - DOH!!! - and embarrassingly the roof fuse had blown - have a good fuse in makes a world of difference!!!

Davey would appreciate if you could send me the pics . I have the following problem

I get flashes on the panel on starting up (4 flashes i think)

With engine running the power hood stopped completed its opening. it went halfway, released the lid by two inches but would not complete and there is a clicking like a motor is trying to do something
If i turn engine off and drop hood it goes all the way back
ALso the loight in the boot does not come on when opening the boot so i suspect a dodgey loom

any help would be grateful

i am by no means an expert but i have successfully fixed mine and had a summer of fully functional hood operation so can only comment on my experiences

all i can say is 4 flashes means something is wrong - yes i bloody know that!!!! but what the number of flashes means i have no idea

when you turn off the engine/ingnition the power hood pump becomes "free" as there is no power to it and you can move the hood manually - but when powered up you are pushing against the pistons when closing the roof by hand

all my photos are on www.audifans.net (http://www.audifans.net) which is my main point of reference for all things audi you will need to register (free) but its worth it

go to the users gallery and look for DaveR's Cabbie all the pics are under "Boot Loom Repair" with some comments to explain just what the hell was going on.

the boot light is operated by the lock mechanism and i think it is more likey to be a solenoid that has corroded thats causing the porbs - i have the same on mine btu not got round to sorting it yet - i have read that it is a ball that makes the ciruit as the boot is opened but not sure - also heard its a mercury switch - that i really do doubt

have a lok at my pics and that should help - any more - and message me again

good luck

cheers

I dont have any problems with my powered hood however the red light flashes about eight times before going off when starting the engine.

I assumed as long as it went off there were no problems, the manual states it comes on when starting then goes off.

I assume its ok then.

hi , i'm kinda replying to a few questions in one here

the audi soft top is designed in a way the boot and soft top interact with one another so as not to damage the bodywork as both cannot operate at the same time without crunching,
roof open, boot no work ,and vice a versa,

also there is a clever little switch built in called a potentiometer that operates the roof operation,
these do pack up on a periodic basis{bloody things}...they retail at £48.00 for the part plus fitting.

also the roof is connected to the roof storage compartment in the boot, which has a silly plastic clip either side, these break and stop operation,
these are 69p retail...£5.00 fitted,,

if the dash light says roof not secure yet it looks all good, and car bleeps each time pull off there is a catch that fails in the roof final securing phase, these are £103.00 retail...fitting maywell double this at the dealers.

the thing is some of the faults these roof are prone to, wont be picked up by the diagnostic test because some are plastic catches and switches,
although they will pick up motor function, wiring, potentiometer type problems.....
