hi all
here is a post i put on another forum that didn't prompt much response so am trying my luck on here ...
this happened back in february on a rare sunny day...
"right - put the roof down the other day for the first time this year after lunch for a top down drive back to the office - not a problem.
got back to work and the roof would not go back up its a power roof and i held the switch and still nothing - sometimes it takes a while to start the mechanism so used to a bit of a wait. still nothing. had to put roof up manually. also not a problem but it does raise questions....
leading on to the title of this post i now cannot open the boot. the remote locking/unlocking makes no difference and the boot also wont unlock when i use the key - but it does still operate the central locking. the boot operation was fine before i had the roof down on thursday.
has anybody had a similar problem and successfully solved it. i knoe the roof and boot operation are linked in that you cannot open the boot while the roof mechanism is in operation (unless the engine is running!!).
i kind of think its an electrical thing as i cannot use the roof mechanism now either OR the all window switch by the handbrake.
if i have blown a fuse will i find in the usual place under the windscreen or is there fuses placed anywhere else unique to the cabbie.
or do need to take the IT expert approach to everything and "recycle the power" by disconnecting the battery for a while.
any help greatly appreciated
cheers
Dave"
i got a response saying the cables on the boor hinges needed replacing as they will have split - sure enough that was the case - BOTH sides.
So...
"after about 2 weeks of the roof not working the boot unlocked itself and had worked as it should ever since - how ever the roof has reamined faulty- and when i turn the ignition key the roof warning light on the dash would flash 4 times - i spoke to the local audi specialist i have used and just from over the phone he said "it is the left hand hinge loom the wires are broken"
as the weather has been poor fixing the roof has not been a top prority but i had a free weekend so i thought right i am going to fix this and i finally plucked up the nerve to attack the boot loom repair.
sure enough the wires had broken on BOTH sides as it turned out so i effected a repair using some wiring harness i got from an 80 in the local breakers for a tenner. not going to go into the detaisl here and now but can of anyone wants i took a load of pics too
anyway both sides are now repaired and buzzed thorugh just to check continuity and all is good - except the roof still does not work. when i turn on the ignition the roof light in the dashboard now flashes 10 times.
does the number of flashes relate to a specific problem and is there list of these somewhere to help isolate the problem.
when i release the t-handle (the windows all go down as they should) and then pull up the power roof button i can hear a click from the boot - is that the relay on the roof pump. i know my repair has made some diffrence coz i did not hear that click before.
where is the next place to look for faults - i am concerned that the catches that hold the tonneau down need a bood clean - is it possible to put the roof down wihen the power hood mech does not work?
one other thing is that water is getting in the boot lid around the lights - could this be damaging the electrics around the lock?
that'll do for now - hope its clear and hope some one can help
thanks "
and a bit of detail abotu my loom repair...
"the wires i took from the 80 were from the harness that goes from the boot to the front of the car - i did not take the looms from the hinges as they had already been repaired!!!
when i made the new harness up i stripped the wires from the old harness and replaced all wires basically one at a time to make sure i did not have any left over
for information i can confirm that each side of the boot loom has 7 conductors
i need to look elsewhere now to fix the problem "
now i cannot open the boot again and feel i need to recheck the continuity of the repaired loom again)
most import thing is to get the boot open - has anyone had this problem and fixed it simply - i dont want to go smashing the rear light cluster to get acces to the boot lock mech so i can open it.
sorry for the long post but want to share as much info as poss
hope someone can help
cheers
