How I rebuilt my A2

This is the story of My A2. In loving memory of my late Nephew 'Shoby' who sadly passed away at the tender age of 4. My brother had a A2 for him and he used to love it very often having to be taken for a drive in it, to get him to fall asleep, as he had some learning difficulties. The A2 become associated with him and we called it 'Shoby car'.

SO, When her indoors wanted a car, without a second thought, I decided an A2 was gonna be it!
As I couldn't afford to buy one on the road, and to make it 'extra' special, because of all the love that would go into it, I decided to look for one from a salvage dealer. I was careful not to buy one with any body damage on it as I know these are very hard to get repaired, as my brother had experienced a 3 month wait to get a knock fixed in the rear wing.
I saw this car and thought I could make a nice little run around from it as I really liked this car. The two main reasons being 'Shoby car' that it is an all aluminium, making it twice as unique to me. It was fire damaged inside with it starting under the dashboard causing it to melt down together with lot of other parts around the vacinity.

Anyway, I looked at it and went down to the dealers to ask the prices for the wiring loom. I was quoted £433 for the 'Main Loom' which runs along the sills and under dashboard, all other parts would come from used spares sources. After factering it into the costs, I thought I'd buy the car and get on with the job.

After paying for it, eagerly taking delivery, I made a thorough examination around it, listing what I needed and then went on my merry way down to the *********** with car details in hand, to order the Wiring loom. I was in for a massive shock! as it turns out the wiring loom I was quoted for was for one of the smaller ones under the bonnet and NOT the Main loom which I needed, this main loom would now cost a staggering £3200+ !!...WHAT?!
The *********** 'donkeys' had now caused me a massive problem!.I got home to collect my thoughts and see what my next step would be.
I called other dealers and they either told me they didn't sell the part or quoted me the same price!!

SO, I was left with car on driveway and no real way out, I had also paid and bought a set of seats, doors panels, and dashboard from a spares place costing me over £800 for these items.

SO, I decided I had no choice but to get on with the clean up and see how the search for a used petrol main loom goes. Mine being Petrol and sods law seeing to it that I would only have access to Diesel wiring mean't that I was in for a long wait. The search for the parts began.

Out of desperation, at one point I decided to go and extract a loom from a Diesel A2, which I did and then rewired my car back together only to realise that because of the mistakes in the Audi's diagrams I was unable to make the modifications to the petrol requirements, so after a long few months of waiting and searching I finally found a A2 petrol car that was totally mint!, it had a 'destruction order' according to a big car salvage /recycling centre in Pool Bournemouth, I pleaded with them to sell it to me as a whole but they said they can't due to this 'destruction order'.

This little car was apparently abandoned, and it was sitting in a corner all shy and immaculate. I couldn't believe that I was going to have to smash into this car as they had no key!, it seemed such a shame. So after breaking the drivers door window, I managed to open the driver door BUT the rest of the doors were deadlocked!.. bloody hell this was gonna be hard work getting the complete loom out of this car and the salvage yards employees were having a laugh (I swear they were taking bets, and I can tell you we wern't the favourites) thinking it wouldn't be possible to get it out with car being dead locked, raining as hard as I've ever remembered it raining, VERY strong cold winds, oily wet open grounds, which would cause us to slip into the goo several times, we were working in this weather, my friend Ricky & I had under 4 hours to get it all done before they closed on a Friday!.

Luckily the impossible comes quite naturally to me and we focused and dived straight in. Having worked so VERY hard without any breaks or even a chance for a drink, we, being totally exhausted, and with a 3.5 hour drive to get back home to come yet, managed to get what we needed, interior out, dash out, fittings out, then wiring extracted from it and from rest of car, roof lining out, carpets out and other bits we needed. Ofcourse having to take out anything that came in the way .... which was everything!. Anyway proved the betting sods wrong didn't we ..lol

After getting back & few days in bed suffering from exhaustion, I got back into my car and stripped the dashboard out ...yet again... in order to remove the 'diesel' wiring that I had fitted in previously.

SO, this time I rewired the complete inside of the car and also changed the door trims - rears needed modifications as mine has electric windows in rear and the new trims didnt have switches nor did the new loom have the wiring so this also had to be incorporated into the wiring loom. Fitted in complete roof lining carpets etc etc.

The 'Shoby car' is now ready and I'm SO very proud of it, including the standard of my work, and I will look forward to years of pleasure from it...I hope.

Anyway if your still awake you will be able to see the pics below.

I would like to thank Shoby for his precious time with us as he will always continue to be an inspiration to me.

I would also like to thank my friend Ricky, mycarsavw, Crasher for their assistance.

Thank You

Thank you, To be honest I quite enjoy a technical challenge of this type. It was only after completing it, the magnitude of the task dawned on me, LOL ... glad it was that way around :biglaugh: ..... although peoples opinion's of me being mad to take on an impossible task didn't help, proved them wrong though, gives me a great buzz that .....LOL

I am looking into wiring one of the 2 sets of clocks. One has 3 connectors in the back and other has 2. My original wiring didn't have the 3rd connector at the back of these clocks, nor does the new loom and I am thinking about building a loom and patching it into the cars wiring, what the 3rd connector on the back of clocks does is not clear as yet but I assume it may be down to the 'Driver Information screen', or the control of it.

Trouble is I STILL have an issue with my immobiliser preventing my car from starting, and very little info seems to be available.

Will get it done though ;)

that looks brill job done sadley i would have said leave it alown as fire damige is bad but you proved a good point that car unless you do a cheack on it will never kno its been on fire.
with your immobilser are you still using the origanal keys and ransponder or did you change them

Thank You. I took this fire damage on this time because of several reasons;

Because it had not touched the body of the car, on the outside and scorched only a little of the metal on the inside under the dash which is fully repaired.

Being Aluminium, it won't rust therefore I had no concerns about taking it on.

It is impossible to tell that the car was damaged at all, because there isn't any damage on it. In fact it is better condition than some I have seen of later years.

IF it was steel then I won't even have dream't of it as I did one in my teens (1985) and my first project with the dreaded Ford Cortina (Pics attached)...ahh the younger days eh! ... and I know what steel means to work with after fire damage.

Ref immobilser, I have the following cofiguration:

My original ECU, Comfort Unit, and key, but NO clocks as they were destroyed.

Replacement ECU, Comfort Unit, Clocks, but NO key from scrap car.

I also have another set of clocks which have the driver info from a separate source.

Can't start it, BUT CAN open & close the car using the remote fob, with my original ECU, & Komfort Unit in place, :( and its SO frustrating as it is the last this to do, before it starts.

Thanks again

it could be like the volvos you may need to send it in to have it reprogramed by vw or it could have the same fetures where volvo make things vin specific ie clocks out of one wont work in anouther you may be worth doing a post on the main part of the forum for the imobaliser fault as some one will kno plenty to get it running again

Great job mate, especially in the circumstances. It's great that you managed to find some inspiration, and now Shoby's memories can live on...

With regards to your immobiliser problem, am I right in assuming you have VAG-COM? It sounds as though your keys are coded to the central locking system, but not the immobiliser. If you don't have VAG-COM:

With all of the A2s paperwork, is their what I think will be a 4 digit SKC code (or is it 8 digits?). I think Audi would need this to sort your problem. If you knew what you were doing with VAG-COM, you can code the immobiliser yourself.

If you are interested in buying some VAG-COM stuff, talk to the forum member Eshrules, he will do you a good deal, probably with free shareware software, but you would need the fully registered software to code immobilisers. The fully registered thing costs 99$ from Ross-Tech.

I have never tried coding the immobiliser myself, I have only heard it done before.

Good luck with Shoby's motor, Sarge.

Paul

Thanks Paul.

Yes I do have Vag Com, but it won't allow me to get into the immobiliser as it requires the 'pin' and, as I don't have it I cannot get any further.

I don't mind paying for the Vag Com registration, but as I understand it, it won't help me as that software doesn't extract the pin number.

Okay, you are right, it won't let you extract the pin. But if you do spend the 99 dollars, and convince Audi to have a look at the car and give you the pin using their machinery, then you could code it yourself.

Hi Paul, I tried that one mate, they said that they can't give me the pin as they don't know it.
I wonder if there's anyone working for Audi on this forum?

Even the Audi techs can't see the SKC code, it is all carried out on tinterweb using the VAG system GEKO and the SKC code is not revealed.

To be honest, Sarge, Audi must know the immobiliser code, because if you had disconnected the battery or something and immobilised your own car, then Audi would be more than expected to sort it out.

Audi WILL have their own software for this, a few years ago I had an M reg Volvo 460, which I was about to sell. I disconnected the battery to change it, and the car immobilised itself. I had to get it towed to Bury Volvo who told me that it might not be worth repairing. They sorted it and I sold it for £1200 the following week, just after spending £400 at Volvo to get it sorted.

Put it this way, if Volvo have the technology to sort it, then Audi certainly will have. There is no way that Audi cannot repair an immobilised car.

If Audi are holding on to the immobiliser information (which they must be) then this would be bordering illegal and surely would be unfair practice. Perhaps they need reminding of that. ;)

Another thing, there is a member on this forum called Crasher who has been really helpful to myself, and may know what to do in your situation. He is a VAG Specialist.

Paul

EDIT: Crasher has just replied, making my reply virtually useless!

i was thinking to what you said do you still have the origanal key ie try holding it next to the ignition barel when you try to start it you never kno
allso on the volvo front my 940 got blocked out but i removed the fuse while it was inactive i got a v70 to sort out soon but thats a dash falior i recon you may be worth sending it in you have spent alot allready for a gusse but it should sort it

I tried that too, the original key and barrel are in use, but its the immobiliser thats activated because of the introduction of the replacement clocks.

I have decided to bite the bullet & called in a professional today, and he took away my clock's and ecu's to his workshop, will know Wednesday what happens

Well 10 days after the so called specialist came, and took my ecu's and clocks away, I had to keep calling him to chase him and got absolutely nowhere. Got my items back and back to square one. Complete waste of time.

UPDATE :

Well, I decided to call another guy out to do my programming, it took this man a few seconds, and he retrieved the pin from the car with his handheld device.

He then programmed keys to it and ....VALLA.... Shoby Car fired straight up! .... YES folks I am pleased to say that Shoby Car is now running and will be on the road soon.
Will take more pics after it's been washed and taxed & tested.
