Hello guys, right I own a 1.6 1998 MK 5 Petrol GOLF

I brought a vagcom lead a while ago off ebay and tried to install it on a laptop to try and use the software to match some keys.

I found it too hard and left it. Attempted again today, using some of the posts on here, and it worked... well it installed and found the interface.

I have attached some images of my problem. I do the test it finds the port and interface as mentioned, but it seems it dosn't connect to the car, when I select moduals, it says "no response from controller".

When I connect the lead to my car, the little blue light, lights up on my lead.

I'm using this version VAG-COM Release 409-1 and these drivers USB-VAG-COM ISO9141 驱动. Both download from links from someone called "Eshrules"

I had this problem with Opel-Tech diagnostic software. You are not using a USB to COM Port converter are you? I was, and it said no response from controller because the converter could not talk 2 ways, so the PC was talking to the car, the car was talking back yet the software blamed it on the car not responding because the converter couldn't talk back to the PC from the car.

mine only turns once, then twice to start. I know newer cars have two clicks, one just enables you to turn the radio etc on.

I think I am... It installed a second driver, USB SERIAL converter. How can I be 100% sure.

The lead is a USB one.

Yeah, I meant hardware. A physical USB-Serial Port converter.

firstly, unless you purchased the cable from myself, MY drivers will probably not function correctly.

secondly i note the vehicle is a mk5(but 1998?), hence, canbus, a 3rd party cable with 409 will not establish comms with the car. you will require a canbus cable.

HTH :)

Arn't canbus cables used on newer cars? confused. ... have just seen where the confusion has come in.

Mark 4 golf. Didn't mean to put 5, 5s were first made in what 2003?

Thanks sorry for that.

That was what had confused me :(

All I can advise in that case, is to contact the vendor you purchased your cable from, as you require the correct drivers for that cable.

thanks

Just installed correct drivers, same issues.

If I plug just the lead into my vag port in my car, without the ubs connected, the blue light on my lead lights up.

Any further ideas??

davelondon,

Any luck in getting your cable working? I have the same problems with mine - although I also get "Can't Synch Baud Rate" errors for the "01-Engine".

Sounds like we have the same cable This is what mine looks like:

I have tried the latest drivers from the "USB -> Serial" chip manufacturer (FTDI) - no joy. I can, however connect to the "17-Instruments" and get DTC's for that...

hi guys totally new to vag com but recieved my cheapo cable today and had same problem after alot of head scratching i found that if i checked the "force dumb mode" box then clicked test then clicked apply instead of save, i could then access engine fault codes. Thats as much as i could do though as about 30 secs after that my laptop or should i say vista threw a wobbly and won't run vag-com now. anyone got it to work on vista???

Ok, a few things I found (mainly through this forum) when running VAGCOM using a 3rd party interface on Vista.

1) Don't install anything that came with the interface until you have downloaded and installed VAGCOM from Ross-Tech and attempted to install the interface automatically (Windows found the drivers I needed without using the CD which came with it - trying to use the CD initially just caused problems).

2) When running VAGCOM on Vista, right-click and "run as administrator" (or click preferences and select the box to always run as administrator).

Hope this helps...

Please keep in mind that the version of VAG-COM you are trying to run was released in 2004 long before Vista was relelased. VAG-COM 409 is not compatible with Vista. Search other forums for how people "clugged" Vista to get 409 to run.
